SwainZag Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 According to Bobby Nightengale, here, after Paddack's start Monday, the Twins will push the rotation back a day and call up a starter to start Tuesday. Who is coming up? Who is going down? Guesses?
lecroy24fan Verified Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 It's Varland's day to pitch for St. Paul so likely him. Jocko87, DocBauer, Richie the Rally Goat and 2 others 5
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 If it’s Varland, I wonder if he stays up, possibly in the bullpen, afterwards. Punto4President 1
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Send Sands out and keep Varland? If a reliever gets multiple innings today I think are on the way to St. Paul. I suppose if Paddack’s velocity is down again today he might be to the IL with Varland staying in the rotation. The other 4 still get that extra day. Craig Arko and Richie the Rally Goat 2

Yeah, seems likely, and also a little scary because Varland is not pitching very well at St Paul. Boushley has thrown quite a bit better and is on the 40-man. Festa of course is the hot young arm, but isn't on the 40-man and may not be ready, even for the Rockies.
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I would rather see Festa or Boushley than Varland. I think Louis has a lot more to work on on the farm given his performance there.
mnfireman Verified Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 FanGraphs has Boushley listed as tomorrow's projected starter....
Schmoeman5 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 It's the Festa vis for the resta of vis. big dog 1

It almost has to be Varland. He won't stay for for more than an hour after the game though, he'll be replaced by the replacement for the bullpen arm he replaced. He wouldn't be available for a few days which would negate the value of the spot start. I'm interested to see what he looks like in a real game. No telling what he's playing with in the AAA games. DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I think it's Varland. He's been hot and cold at AAA so far. What we don't know is what he's been working on down there. Have some of his bad outings/innings been him just being bad? Or has he been focusing so hard on certain pitches for development purposes he's had those bad outings/innings similar to ST? I'm guessing Castillo goes down, Varland up, and then someone up right after for the pen, with Castillo waiting for his next call. I'm guessing Henriquez or Funderburk get the next call? I kinda like the strategy though. An extra day of rest for everyone else. FlyingFinn 1

CRF Verified Member Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Looks like it is going to be Louie. It'll be interesting to see how he does. He hasn't been setting the world on fire in StP. I hope he doesn't get shelled in his first game back up here. That would not be real good for his confidence level. Apparently, they optioned Castillo down. DocBauer 1
stringer bell Verified Member Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 As reported by Betsy Helfand, Varland is starting this evening's game and Diego Castillo won a ticket on the Green Line. After Varland pitches today, it would seem likely that he'll be optioned back to St. Paul. If that is the case, the Twins can't recall Castillo, so I wonder who they would promote. I suppose Funderburk is an option. He has been in St. Paul for the allotted 15 days. chpettit19, jorgenswest and DocBauer 3

twinfan Verified Member Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Varland may be pumped and telling himself "I need to show them NOW" and might pitch 5 good innings. Getting sent down can affect a player's psyche and cause a letdown. Maybe getting a shot here will give him a shot in the arm. DocBauer 1

Winder could be recalled, Funderburk, and several non-roster guys have been pretty good. Castillo could be recalled immediately if one of the guys on the major league roster goes on the Injured List. Blewett (what a name) and Jensen have mostly pitched well for the Saints, though not on the 40-man roster. DocBauer 1
