I think you’re fair. Back in my day (eye roll) a guy with his speed would have been coached/developed to maximize his impact by being a high contact, menace on the base paths type. His approach at the plate essentially negates his speed. He could be such a disruptive factor, in a good way, but as is he’s an easy out, No. 9 type player. Dave Borton and Parfigliano 2
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted April 21, 2024 Posted April 21, 2024 Santana is routinely getting beat by fastballs. That's the end for any ball player. It's not "can't hit the curve." It's "can't catch up to average fastballs." Sometimes it happens at the little league level, sometimes high school. Or college. Or the minors. And sometimes it happens because age is undefeated. I don't think this is just a slow start. Santana looks completely cooked to me. Dave Borton, RpR, OvertheHill and 4 others 7

Do most of us agree that this should be the end of the Louie Varland, big league starter, experiment? I say put him in the bullpen, not back in AAA as a starter. Gotta Disagree, Bullpen ? he has zero control and allows way to many walks-Hits Homers, Louie lucky to be so young , Maybe learn some Korean or Japanese and well see in 2-3 years, Alot of players have !!!!!!!!

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted April 21, 2024 Posted April 21, 2024 Martin hasn't impressed much in the outfield, has he? That's a terrible play to cost a run. He was never catching that, got too close to the wall, cost the team a run. OvertheHill and RpR 2

I guess in Jeffers' case there's some merit to giving a catcher a full day off now and again. Catching is tough duty. And it was and remains pretty clear Santana wasn't signed to be a part time 1st baseman. He was being counted on as the every day guy from the time ink went to paper on the contract. I'd assume he gets another month, month and half of full time duty before any changes to that. ib uk and RpR 2

My thinking is that Varland looked good in the bullpen last year in the playoffs, so let's see if that can continue. Maybe it's a mental thing where he can concentrate better in short bursts or maybe he's just more relaxed. You're right, the way he's pitched this year an overseas stint might be the way to go. I say let's make him the closer in St. Paul for a week and then give him a shot in the Twins bullpen. mrtwinsfan 1

I liked this but it means I agree with it. I'm not sure at this point anyone would like the idea of another 6 weeks of Santana as a daily first baseman. Except for 29 other major-league teams who are probably quite cheered by the prospect. RpR and USAFChief 1 1

They are so apathetic and indifferent to how poorly they are playing. You can tell they are poor in all phases of baseball right now. Parfigliano 1

We didn't have to spend money with guys like that just sitting there for the taking. Just ask around.
