I'm gonna say something controversial (hahahahahaha) here: Rocco is a pretty godawful manager. Spreadsheet told him 2 hours before game time yesterday when to remove Ober. Today the spreadsheet didn't tell him to watch Varland pitch to the first 3 batters of the game and get him out before he tanks the entire game.

Not really controversial. But I don't think Rocco wants to get 27 outs from his bullpen either

Rocco is a symptom.  Falvey is the disease.

I don't think Falvey is dictating in-game managerial decisions, but certainly he hired Rocco with an idea of how he preferred his manager to operate.

However, Rocco is under no obligation to make the same thoughless decisions day after day.

Rocco isnt obligated. That is true. But is he the dutiful soldier?

He looked great last week, but he's also got an ERA of 6.08 at St Paul this year. They're going to have to send Varland down and call SWR up, but I'm not entirely enthused by his AAA numbers.

I think his AAA ERA is inflated by one really bad inning where he gave up 6 or 7 runs, 3 or 4 on his own and the rest let in by relief. Overall, he's actually ben very good in AAA other than that.

Just joining so I'm sorry if this was already discussed. Do most of us agree that this should be the end of the Louie Varland, big league starter, experiment? I say put him in the bullpen, not back in AAA as a starter.

Nice job by Sands and Bowman to stop the bleeding.

Now let’s get back in the game! Please.

So close

Yeah, I'd say that's the general consensus. But personally I don't think SWR is any kind of answer, and Paddack isn't any better than Varland.

The FO left this team woefully short of starting pitching this season.

That would be good. Because he did look really good in the game when he was up.

I guess no matter what we'll be seeing what he puts up in the majors since I can't believe they'll keep Varland in the rotation and leave SWR at St Paul after this outing.

Just think of what kind of hitter Buxton *might* be if wasn’t trying to jerk every pitch down the left field line…….

Not great, but probably significantly better.

I wouldn’t let it Festa much longer.

I disagree. I think SWR could be a decent mid-rotation starer and will give us a chance to win most starts. Varland is not doing that. Paddack either, but he seems closer to competence. I agree that we should have more in AAA but we don't. We have to play the hand we have.

I know I rag on Buxton.  Some say excessively.

Guy is a phenomenal athlete stuck in a philosophy that is, was, and will drag him down.  He needs to get away from a pull...pull..pull like he's trap shooting system.

Contact is his game.

Certainly don’t have a problem with him getting more chances at this point. My expectation would be lower than yours, though. As they say…I’d love to be wrong.
