I do not see this move for another couple of trips through rotation.  If Varland continues to give up the 3 run HR he will need to get swapped out for SWR.  However, SWR had 1 start I think we are getting a little too excited over 1 good start.  I have high hopes for him, but he had a poor start in AAA this year too.  Every starting pitcher has some good starts and some bad starts. Give each a few more starts.  If you flip them now, Varland will be first up when needed for a spot start, assuming he would be rested, but SWR will get his shot as well soon enough I am sure.

Had to right-size their rotation this year.

I prefer my starters young and cheap, so I was willing to meet their monetary demands if they were willing to meet the prospect demands.

Was that what happened when the anointed ace, Pablo Day Lopez, opened that series? Struggling?

Well, he is human and, as all humans do, he will have a bad day once in a while. What separates the Aces are the guys that have very few of those a year. Just look at where Detroit's stats stack up next to the Twins. Like I said, almost as bad.

Spot on.

Switching Horses after 9 innings and 6 innings of work is... a little impetuous.

Take it slow

Things will work out fine.

All we need is just a little patience.

.... just a little paaaaatience....yeaaaaaah, yeah....

I get it. I guess I just get stuck a little at the one stat that really counts, the 7-4/4-6 coming in and the 9-6/6-8 going out, and that total spanking in the first game with Lopez shelled that Rocco literally gave up and had Castro finish (and Detroit's team average is 32 points higher). And maybe the goo goo gaa gaa about Lopez is a little premature. It really takes more than last year and 1 of 3 starts this year, for me. I do hope Lopez does earn the ace status. Time will tell. We are our record. We really needed him to do the ace thing on Friday.

If Louie gets thumped again tonight, replacing him in the rota is something they better be thinking about. I just don't know if Varland is cut out to be a starter. He hasn't shown much in that capacity, but he was great in the pen at the end of last season.

I guess that's settled after tonight.

LV and SWR are #5 & #6 in 2024. I would expect no more than 40 total starts between them. All we really need is sub 4 era in those starts and get the bats woke up!

I expect Varland to stick in the rotation in the short term since the front office and  Baldelli have a history of giving even the worst starters at least 5 and often close to 10 starts before making a change. It is also lucky for Varland that the bullpen has been doing well without Duran and Topa. If the bullpen was struggling there were be a lot of pressure to move Louie to the pen where he has shown he can be a good late inning guy.

I am up for giving Varland a few more starts - we really need him to stick - but I was encouraged to see Woods-Richardson's performance in his spot start - good to have him in the on deck circle.    Warning - Extreme knee-jerk and sarcastic comment of the day - Good thing we did not sign Gray or Lorenzen - yesterday they combined to pitch 11 innings and give up no runs.   Couldn't resist - we will see how their performance plays out over the season.   Lorenzen had a lot of baserunners and somehow avoided trouble and Gray was pitching against Oakland.

Varland is a batting practice pitcher,he has no control of his Cutter. If he throws 10 Cutters 7 are on a tee.Need to send him with Wallner to St Paul. There he can work on location and Wallner can work on putting the bat on the ball. This is the Major Leagues, produce or work on things at AAA.With the way this team is playing they will be out of it by May 1st.Even Lopez is having a blow up inning in every outing.

I just dont think Varland has done enough to merit any kind of leash. We need to ride hot hands when they are hot, especially when it comes to young guys with options. I would give him one more start to show what he's got and then give SWR another look if he falls flat

Maybe 1 or 2 more starts after last night's stinker

SWR already optioned back to AAA. SWR definitely is the 6th starter now waiting at AAA. He should get plenty of opportunity at the MLB level this year. Definitely an option if Varland has a few more dissappointing starts.

So Louie wasn’t good again Monday.

Paddack got knocked all over tonight v. Orioles.

IMO, they each get 1 more start and w/o improvement SWR has to be penciled in for 3 consecutive starts.

Don’t know if Team has enough guts to Option Varland and put Paddack into the Pen? ……,it may be best option but who is then the 5th starter………stretch out Sands in short term?

Gotta shake things up if Varland & Paddack don’t change immediately!
