Duran threw one 104.8 mph.  Question: is the ball at maximum velocity when leaves his hand or does it accelerate?

How would it accelerate?

I would guess same as firearm cartridge where there is muzzle velocity and down range velocity.

I think so, yes.  The part about accelerating.  Contact with those, aside from option number A, would cause the ball to decelerate.

M's OF Kelenic was placed on the IL this morning. After he took a called third in the ninth on a Duran curve ball, he kicked the water cooler and broke his foot. He had a terrific at-bat and fouled off a number of 104 mph fastballs.

It's puzzling to me.  If the balls at 104.8 mph when leaves hand, then his hand must be moving at 104.8 mph, which doesn't seem possible.  On the other hand, how could the ball accelerate after leaving the hand with no further  force applied?

Dunno. I remember a couple ground balls that seemed to me to accelerate after contacting Tsuyoshi Nishioka's glove.

Whoa, getting salty on the broadcast microphone with Trevor there in the booth with him.  You know the mic is hot, right, Dick?

Speaking of Duran, Jered Kelenic was placed on the IL today, after breaking his foot on the water cooler following his 9th inning K last night.

Any word on the condition of the water cooler?

A bit shaken up. It’s taking a day or two to process the assault and determine whether to press charges. If I were the water cooler, I’d contemplate whether it’s worth performing my only function when my health and safety is at risk.

That's a relief.  I heard that that cooler worked hard to make it to The Show.

The early hope is that any injury won't negatively affect its range, which was already pretty limited

Dunno. This seems more your area of expertise.

I’m glad you’re bringing this topic to light by the way! No one ever considers the journey to be 0.000001% of all water coolers to make it to professional baseball.

No problem.  Next week I'm doing an expose on dugout gum buckets.  Fascinating stuff!  Very inspiring.
