Twins claim catcher José Godoy

So I'm watching part of the spring training game between the red sox and the twins.  Jeffers is catching and Sanchez is the DH.  So in that scenario, which I am assuming should happen quite often this season, who will be the backup catcher on the bench in case of injury etc.....  I hear all kinds of stuff about Story etc... But who are they going to have as that back up dude as they don't have Rortverdt, Garver, or Astudillo anymore?

Good question? In trading the idea is to trade away your fat to add to your muscle. We have traded our muscle to gain more fat. Essentially we have traded away Donaldson (1st rate 3B), Garver (1st rate catcher) and Rortvedt (1st rate future catcher) for Sanchez, Ursela (NYY rejects) and a couple of  lottery ticket pitching prospects which we have a lot of to fill up our 40 man. Yeah, I know it was a salary dump but was it worth it?

I see Jeffers as a back-up to Garver and later to Rortvedt, he is the fat that should've been traded for much needed frontline SP along with Arraez, inferior 2B/3B  back up which we are heavily invested with. Trading in this scenario we'd need to get a LH hitting catcher, because I think Rortvedt would need more time in AAA to hone his hitting skills.

The scenario today is our back-up catcher is the starter and our need is  ideally the same, we need a Castro type catcher. One more hole to fill

Jose Godoy the catcher we claimed from SF looks kinda like a Rortvedt clone just 3 years older. Left-handed bat with similar minor league hitting and fielding profiles. Gets on base a little more with a little less power, and throws out a few more runners with less passed balls per game. Looks like a good and timely claim.

So is it good, that Seattle let him go, and San Fran let him go within 4 days of claiming him? Which also leaves the Giants with just 2 catchers on their 40 man.

Not unusual for catching depth.

Looks like the Giants have 4 non-roster catchers in camp this spring, including some mild prospects.

We only had 2, and they are not prospects.

Good question. Sometimes guys end up as roster fodder, no fault of their own.

Hello mudder, hello fodder, here I am at... wait, where am I now? Should I unpack?

I played catcher in Jr. High and High School. I think I still have something in the tank at 50....I like calling it old man strength.
