jmlease1 Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I think the Twins FO is screwed. If they make a deal for Berrios, they're going to get buried for "giving up on 2022" and will likely get pilloried by the fan base for not getting enough, because there won't be a proven MLB player in the batch. If they don't make a deal for Berrios, they're going to get buried by the fanbase for not getting something for him while getting destroyed for not locking him up to a long-term deal (with the usual cascade of "the Pohlads are cheap" cries). Because this season has gone so poorly with expectations being fairly high, you have a lot of loud voices who no longer have any faith or trust in them, and I really am starting to think there's nothing that will satisfy, absent a trade screw-job so monumental it'll make Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell look even. It's interesting how fast things can turn here. Dman, chpettit19 and Mike Sixel 3

They aren't comparable things. A test is an individual activity that has only 1 possible answer to each question. The trade deadline is an interaction between dozens of people with moving parts and human dynamics. So if you have a reason to believe that getting closer to the deadline equals worse prospect returns for selling teams I'd love to hear it as perhaps I'm mistaken in my belief and I'm always looking to gain more knowledge. But so far I've provided multiple reasons why I take the stance I do and you've provided a picture of a horse that compares 2 things that aren't comparable. To be honest, I don't get the point of the horse. And you are correct in your description of what a trade deadline is and who it involves, but it is a form of a test at the same time; a test of the FO's ability to use the assets it has to improve the team via trades, buying and/or selling. Or not making trades just to make them, which is a lot harder to grade since they seldom talk about the trades that were never made. We will only know the right answers years after the test is taken in this case, and it will be a subjective, not an objective scoring system. And I would agree with every point you made prior to the horse. I'm going to have to ponder awhile on the horse. chpettit19 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I know teams don't trade top prospects anymore, but if you don't get Jeter Downs, I have no interest in sending Berrios to the Red Sox. None. gunnarthor 1
KnoblauchWasFramed Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Here's what's going to end up happening today; Padres gets: SP Jose Berrios OF/1B Matt Wallner (#13) 1B Miguel Sano (1yr/$9.25m) (Maybe $5m in cash for Hosmer contract??) Twins get: SP Ryan Weathers (#1) SP MacKenzie Gore (#5) LHP Jagger Haynes (#17) 1B Eric Hosmer (1yr/$21m) The Padres get their #2 for 1.5 years behind Darvish as Paddack and Snell have ERA's over 5.00 and have showed signs of improvement but the clock is ticking and the Padres are 5 games back of the Giants. Berrios immediately pushes them back to favorites in the NL West and there is a very good chance they could look to sign Berrios long term just as the Darvish contract is coming to an end. And they get to unload a majority of the Hosmer contract for 2022 while taking Sano back to take his place in the lineup for the rest of the season. If the Padres want a pay off for all of the moves they made and the money they have spent to get past the Dodgers, the prospects should be worth it to them since they are young and have tons of other pitchers in their Top 20. Wallner is a throw in that could maybe help out their 1B spot within 2 years. The Twins get Weathers who could literally slide in behind Maeda tomorrow and could easily hold down that spot for the next 5 years, and bonus, he's left handed and meets the Pre-Arb requirement the Twins had. And in Gore, the Twins get another LHP who could push for the #1 spot as soon as next year. Haynes is 18 years old and in the Rookie and is added in for taking Hosmer off the Padres books. But he is a lottery ticket with Weathers and Gore being the score in this deal. Discuss??

I'd 100% do that deal if I was the Twins, which makes me think it is even less likely to happen...... I wanted Gore in that draft, but he can't throw strikes right now, so he's probably not really #5 in that system at this point......he's the ultimate high risk / high reward guy.....

I guess I always thought that was what winter ball and spring training was for, but I could go with you for minor league prices. Again, somewhat tongue in cheek, if I wanted to see the Saints play I would go watch the Saints play. Don't get me wrong, I get what you are saying, and it may have to be, but we shouldn't sugar coat it and pretend it is the same; only the names have been changed to protect the worthless. Throw the fans a bone for your incompetence and maybe we won't give up. I hear you. It's a lot easier for me to say what I think the Twins should do from here in LA where I can watch the dodgers and Angels, and not have to pay MLB prices to watch the twins throw Ober, Barnes and Jax in a 3 game series. I agree that the Twins should run deals, promotions, etc. to help ease the pain of watching a re-tooling/evaluating team. Doesn't help you if you bought season tickets but that's the risk you take. trust me, I'm in season ticket groups for the Kings, Dodgers, Lakers and Chargers so I'm very familiar with going to games where you keep asking "who is that guy again?" while having the joy of paying full price for the tickets. Rumor has it that the Twins FO actually monitors this board and that there is someone on the board who actually works for the team,. Shows what a great job our moderators do. Don't make the fans pay full price to watch that. You will make more money long term if you treat the fans like adults with a stake in the team. Have Jim Pohlad go on TV flanked by Falvey and Levine, announce the team's longer term plans, and say we're reducing 2021 prices so the fans can come out for the rest of the year and get to know the 2022 team. Give season ticket holders a 10% discount on next year if they buy or renew in the next 30 days. Get the fans invested and you'll make it back and then some next year. Mark G 1

If Snell and Paddack were pitching better I think this is a deal that could maybe get done, but Weathers would start a playoff game over either of those 2 right now so can't imagine they'll deal him. Perhaps Paddack instead of Weathers coming back to MN?

bighat Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Mariners are apparently in the conversation on Berrios. From MLBTradeRumors: MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that the Mariners have been pursuing a Berrios acquisition this week, with the Twins focusing on one of Seattle’s top pitching prospects (Emerson Hancock or George Kirby) as part of a multi-player return. The two sides aren’t close to a deal, Morosi adds. Both Hancock (2020) and Kirby (2019) were first-round picks in recent Mariners drafts and have pitched at Class-A Advanced this year. Both players have missed time with shoulder fatigue this year, but Hancock returned this week and Kirby is expected back within the next couple of weeks, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweeted a couple days ago. My thoughts: Big yikes. A high single-A pitcher with shoulder fatigue is not a very good return for the Twins. In My La Z boy 1

Steve71 Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I like Berrios and Rogers to the Dodgers for Gray and May. We take the TJS risk on May, and they have to wait a couple weeks for Rogers to heal his finger. They get reliable pitching, we get two young studs, one off of TJS. I would also ask for a lottery ticket A level prospect, but those are the essential ingredients for the deal. bighat 1
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I don't think the Dodgers will trade May. Probably not on the list of possible outcomes. How about Berrios and either Robles or, if we have to, Duffy to the Dodgers for Tony Gonsolin, Gavin Lux and either Josiah Gray or Ryan Pepiot? They get starting and bullpen help, we get a mid to back rotation guy in Gonsolin, our starting SS for the next few years, and a potential top end starter.

LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Guys, I live in LA and follow the Dodgers. Very unlikely that hey trade Dustin May. they see him as a future #1 or #2 with several years before free agency. Next year, they see Buhler and May as the 2 of the top 3 in the rotation assuming Kershaw stays (now that Bauer has imploded). Buhler is signed through 2022, and starts arb in 2023 with free agency in 2025. Dustin May doesn't even hit arbitration until 2023 and free agency in 2026. Very hard to give that up. I may be wrong, but I think that Berrios and Rogers or Duffy isn't going to be close to enough. Probably should focus on someone else on a deal with the Dodgers. Mike Sixel 1

twinstalker Verified Member Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I think the trades so far are indications the Twins want far more than teams are willing to give. If the Twins ask the Yankees for Peraza+ for Kepler, why would they do that when they can give up nothing for Gallo? You better have an excellent scouting/analytic group if you're sellers these days, and I suspect the Twins have neither. Their analytics team is seemingly duped by the fallacy of correlation.
