Just noticed that D.J. Johnson, a name from Twins farmland past, has been put on the disabled list by The Rays, after obtaining him in a deadline deal with Cleveland. The guy started with the Rays, went to Arizona, and the Twins had him in their system in 2014-15 before leaving as a free agent and signing with Miami and then the Rockies.

Tommy Milone released by Blue Jays. Has been injured for most of the season anyways.

 

Looks like after just a couple of appearances something popped in the arm of John Curtiss after moving to the Brewers. Probably Tommy John surgery. He'll be out all next year. Sad to see a career setback like that.

Bummer for Curtiss, bummer for Milwaukee, and bummer for what is becoming the annual Former Twin Postseason Bullpen Bracket

Every team that figures to be in the post-season in 2022 also figures to have a former Twins pitcher on their postseason roster that Falvey has given to them. (Except for San Diego, but I am waiving eligibility so that Yu Darvish is San Diego's qualifier)

Graterol and Gibson pitched against each other in the middle innings of the Dodger/Phillies game yesterday. Graterol got the win, and Gibson the loss. Phillies had two starters and Gibson didn't come in until the 3rd inning and pitche 4.1 innings, and gave up 6 (3 earned, and one of his runners left on was allowed to score) and went to 8-4. Graterol pitched two perfect innings with 2 Ks in the 6th and 7th to go to 3-0. He got the win, even though he came in the game in the bottom of the 6th, and the Dodgers were ahead 3-2 and had been since the end of the 4th.

An article examining the Red Sox stretch run listed seven players they didn't want to see on the field the rest of the way. Included were Robles, Perez and Marwin Gonzalez. Hmm, they didn't include Danny Santana.

Actually, one of Falvey's first moves with the Twins was selecting Miguel Diaz with the first pick in the 2016 Rule 5 draft, then immediately swappin him to San Diego in exchange for a different Rule 5 pick (Justin Haley) and cash. Diaz is currently in the San Diego bullpen and has been reasonably effective in mop-up duty -- he could conceivably be on their roster for the wild-card game, when teams load up on relief pitchers.

By the way, @Otto von Ballpark my unpublished study ("study" in air quotes) of twice-traded Top 100 prospects was only for position players, unfortunately. This was in regards to my opinion on the Twins trading for Simeon Woods-Richardson, a pitching prospect who had already been traded once before the Twins traded for him. 

I will have to build a similar study for pitchers so that Gio Gonzalez qualifies and then I will tag you then.

Fernando Abad is back in the majors with the Orioles. 

 

The Twins traded him back in 2016 for Pat Light (remember him?). He finished the year with the Red Sox and pitched decently in 2017.

 

Then he signed with the Phillies and got back to the majors in 2019 with the Giants. Since then he was signed and released by the Nationals and Yankees and then kept by the Orioles in 2020.

Not a bad career.

As referred to above, Marwin Gonzales was officially released by the Red Sox on Monday after being designated for assignment last week. He's now a free agent.

CJ Cron hit his 21st HR for Colorado last night. Dude's batting .408 in August with 7 HR and 22 RBI in the month.

Kohl Stewart pitched a couple games for the Cubs earlier this year. He's given up 8 runs in 12 innings and struck out 10. He's now on the 60 day IL and won't be available until September. Still just 26 years old.....who knows.

Ian Miller, who came up for a late cup of coffee for the 2019 Twins is also in the Cubs organization. A depth piece at AAA Iowa, he's an everyday outfielder and is batting a respectable .273 in 76 games.

Adalberto Mejia is spending the year in Taipei, playing in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. Fubon Guardians is apparently the name of his team. He's started 4 games and has an ERA of 4.64.

Luis Gil already has 1.1 bWAR for the Yankees.  I didn't even know he was on their MLB roster yet.  I think they sent him down but are planning to bring him back up for his next start.  (Story I saw said he was the 27th man on his start last night.)

There are two phases of the Rule 5 draft -- the major league phase that we all hear about, and the lesser-known AAA phase. (There used to be a AA phase too, although that was "phased out" :) )

The AAA phase is a lot like the MLB phase -- teams can selected unprotected players from other orgs -- but players selected in the AAA phase don't have to be offered back or anything, they are pretty much just the property of the new teams.

Of course, the pickings are slim in the AAA phase. Obviously anyone on a MLB 40-man roster is off limits, just like the MLB phase. But in addition to that, each minor league affiliate gets its own protected list -- 38 at AAA and I think similar numbers at each affiliate below too. Teams can only select guys who aren't on any of those lists.

Given the size and number of those minor league protection lists, it's a safe assumption that anyone who has ever been on an org prospect list will be protected, and then some, although those minor league lists are generally never disclosed.

The Wikipedia entry for Rule 5 draft results lists all the picks from the MLB phase, and the "notable" minor league picks each year (using a fairly generous definition of the word "notable"):

Aaron Slegers was signed to a minor league contract for this year and next. I have not heard of this type of transaction before. 
 

Drew Butera signed by the Astros.

Butera's career is one of the most fascinating things about baseball I've been following for the past 10+ years.

His career OPS+ is 48.

He has made $8.4m in his career.

I fully understand why that has happened and good for Drew but still fascinating.

He keeps catching and catching and catching. Good for Drew Butera. He could make the post-season.

Speaking of post-season, Keon Broxton managed to sign with the Brew Crew and assigned to the minors, but eligible to be recalled for the post season. Remember how this guy was tearing things up, so much so we forgot about Kirilloff and Larnach at the end of spring training and it was between him and Garlick and Rooker to break with the team?

And the Rays signing Slegers. Well, it is basically just an earlier signing as a minor league free agent, in truth. Not necessarily a 40-man spot, but a spring training invite and a tad more money than most guys will make at AAA, and thus making him likely to move in the Rule 5 draft.

This is fascinating! A team with currently the best record in Baseball again (now tied again after tonight's Giants win for the same bragging point), will take a look at Vasquez in the heat of a battle to not be in the one game wild card rodeo or win the NL West with the best record in baseball........ but a team like the Twins, with all the right reasons to see Vasquez again, can't seem to find a couple innings for the guy with the likes of what that Twins are throwing out there right now! If Vasquez lights it up for the Dodgers.................
