And there was a hit right to where a second baseman would be, but the shift to the right side, a shift that is supposed to make it even harder to get a hit to the right side..... but it even makes that a play that couldn't be made.

My guess is that in both instances where a shift “allowed” a base hit the pitcher missed his spot. For the shift to work, the pitcher has to properly execute the pitch. Bottom line is that shifting prevents FAR fewer hits than it allows or teams wouldn’t be doing them.

maybe they'll win it in the ninth. and maybe there's a logical explanation. but if you get a two-run lead on the one team chasing you -- and there are only 12 outs to go -- you move in for the kill. you don't put out the call to aaa followed by a guy with inflammatory bowel condition.

You also probably don’t bring in one of three guys that threw 25 plus pitches yesterday. That would be Rogers, May and Duffey.

thanks for calling me invalid. i appreciate that.

I'm not a moderator but I'll say that you were not called invalid. Your opinion may have been called invalid (and I'm not taking sides on that) but you yourself were not.

None had pitched for several days before that. They should all have been available.

only valid in the past, shift is here to stay

Stop the back and forth. People can dislike the shift, people can say it’s here to stay. Both are valid talking points.

Well, the fact that they haven’t been used tells me they aren’t. Also, there’s a nice article on TD that shows how poorly pretty much any reliever does on 0 rest. Just a hunch that it gets even worse when they are asked to throw on that second day after an extended outing the day before.

I am watching the game and saw he didn’t do as I directed him to.

You say that like you're a moderator or something. :)

I would not have used May or Rogers. Littel, Duffy and certainly Romo should have been available.

Twins had to win one this weekend and they won two. Cleveland won't sweep the Phillies and Nationals.

If the Twins win 6-7 of final 13 games I'd like to think they'll be good for winning the division.

But why do I keep thinking about the '64 Phillies?

We could just go 9-4 and not worry about the Indians

Duffey and Littell threw 26 and 27 pitches respectively yesterday. Romo only 13. He probably was being saved for a save situation.

There's a high % chance the Nats will run line-ups out there like we did today. Indians could easily sweep them.

Plenty of guys have pitched in similar circumstances this year. We gave the game away with Romero and Gibson.

I remember hearing Reusse tell a story about when he was covering the Twins during the Mauch years. He said he asked Mauch if he thought much about 1964. Apparently Mauch paused, then said, "Only every ****ing day."

Maybe, but they haven't locked up the WC yet. I suspect it will be too late for Cleveland by then anyway.

Again, referencing that TD article, how did that work out? The numbers say “not well”. It might have worked here and there, but that doesn’t mean it was going to work today. Tired pitchers aren’t as effective. Period. I wouldn’t have used Gibson either, but I also wouldn’t have used anyone that threw 20 plus pitches yesterday. I would have held my nose and most likely used Hildenberger.

Nats have lost 7 of 10 and are far from a lock on a WC spot. At a minimum they'll be likely playing for being home team.

Errors and the need to use Gibson, although I haven't figured out that need with Stewart and Alcala available. I would've brought in someone for a strikeout insted of Gubson for a ground ball. Heck, if I wanted a ground ball I would've brought in Harper. Instead, could've used Hildenberger if you wanted the home run that bad.

Bad moves in the field. Too many.

Cleveland was playing hard. Bieber was out of sync. But Cleveland pushed buttons. Can the Twins be more ruthless sometimes against opponents like this?

I was hoping that both Garver and Cruz would see an at bat once we broke into the Indians pen. Five Twins wins, 4 Indians losses, and the Twins are there.

Young folks who don't what we're talking about need to read about what happened. Especially how Chico Ruiz stole home when Frank Robinson was up. See link.

How many of the back-to-backs came after not pitching at all for 3-4 days? I can't buy any of them being that tired, since none had pitched since at least Wednesday.
