Edit: they are assessed, and are assigned postseason games on that basis, but you can't fire them. They are untouchable. Yes, this includes Joe West.

I just looked it up, and the only ump to be fired in this century was busted for drugs, and the MLB drug policy is something the union agreed to explicitly.
