Wow. Rare! But I don't think as rare as the 2nd player of the game hitting into it. I'm combing through the 719, and haven't found even one of those, yet. Still looking, though.

I'm curious about a deeper analysis of triple plays. Like what percent of them are fluky where someone was trying to get an extra base. What percent of them are grounders vs liners vs flyballs. What's the most common? 5-4-3?

Marwin and Buxton both have a good chance of being 9 and 10.

The most 20+ HR hitters in a season, by an MLB team, is 7. Done many times. We are certainly tracking to break that

This is a noteworthy and interesting statistic, but...

I have a thing about relatively obscure statistical quirks being referred to as records. For example, the most sacrifice bunts ever to take place on a Tuesday day game could be referred to as a record, but should it be? I think the term "record" should be reserved for only the most basic things, like home runs in a season, or World Series Championships, things like that.

 

That said, let me be clear: this is NOT to be taken as anything remotely resembling a flame directed at diehard. As I said, this statistic IS noteworthy, and it's noteworthy because it's one of many ways that shows how unmatched the Twins' home run hitting has been this season and because it illustrates the balanced strength of our lineup, as opposed to just one or two players having a monster season. It's a great example of a fun number, and it highly deserves the like I gave it.

The Twins five primary starting pitchers all have FIPs within .5 runs as of today ranging from Berrios’ 3.8 to Pineda’s 4.25.

 

I suppose that kinda proves that the Twins have depth but lack an ace.

Not really fun but an interesting stat, one that shows why the Twins have the record they do today (great offense, adequate but consistent starting pitching).

I don't know if this should be described as fun but it's worth mentioning.

 

The AL Central is by far the worst division in baseball, currently 35 games below .500 as a group, with a winning percentage of .466. (In non-division games it's .440.) The next worst division is the AL East at -10 games.

 

So this made me wonder if it's the worst division ever, and I found out that it's not even close. The AL West finished play in 1994 with a winning percentage of .437. (.417 outside the division.) Texas had the best record with a .456 winning percentage. However, as many of you have already realized, this is not quite official because in 1994 play was stopped on August 12 due to a players strike and never resumed. So this dubious distinction comes with an asterisk.

 

BTW, extrapolating Texas' record to a 162-game schedule results in a record of 74-88. Can you imagine the apoplectic reactions that would have occurred, especially among baseball purists, if a team 14 games under .500 qualified for the postseason? It would have been supremely entertaining.

Jonathan Schoop homered yesterday--his 16th long ball. He has hit eight of those homers when the Twins already led by seven runs or more. Way back in May I labeled Schoop's contribution as inconsequential and more than two months later, I feel the same.
