Robinson Cano is available

MLBTR say that the Mariners are shopping Cano.  The Twins have money and a need for 2B.  Cano can also play 1B or DH which are also holes on the roster.  Aside from the recent suspension, Cano has an incredible track record of appearing in 150+ games every year since 2006.  Plus he is still producing at a high level offensively and above average defensively.  I'm thinking that with his age and contract, the prospect return could be low if we took all of the contract.

The downside, he is 36 and under an expensive contract for 5 more seasons.  He has a full no trade clause and may not be interested in our fine State.  He is a bit of a PR problem with the PED suspension.

Pretty solid match in my opinion.

It would really depend how much money Seattle is eating in his remaining contract. They would have to eat 50% of the remaining contract for me to pick up the phone. This is an ugly contract compared to Grienke.

I would prefer this to Grienke's contract.  35 Year old Grineke gets 104.5M for 3 years.  36 year old Cano gets 120M for 5 years.  That extra 15M is a pretty easy gamble for me since it could mean 2 more years if he is still productive.  I also believe we would want to take on most of the contract to limit the prospets we surrender.

I think both players are getting close to regression but with Cano I think he could still be valuable at DH when he is in the later years of his contract.  My other point is that 2019 is not likely to be a contention year for us, so 1/3 or more of Grienke's contract might be wasted.

I see your point but Grienke fills a dire need of the Twins, and whoever takes on Cano's contract will be lucky if he sticks at 2B 2 years from now.

It pains me to say this because I'm looking for immediate MLB help. They can use $24 million in better ways than tying it to 36 year old Cano.

Twins do not need any overpriced vets until that is the difference in a WS title. A Cano type would be a disaster for the 2019 Twins. Can't have a Sano and a Cano in the same infield. That is an old baseball axiom. Just hope the ...ano that the Twins already have comes through. Unfortunately, that is 50-50 at best.

He is 36 and has 5 years left on his Joe Mauer contract. How many second basemen play until age 40?

He sat out half of last year, btw.

If Seattle wants to eat half of his contract and take no one in return, sure, let's talk. :o

Why would you want to be on the hook for $12M for the next 5 years for him? Those last 2-3 years will not be at 2nd and the stats will drop like crazy as well.

Besides the fact he would not waive his no trade clause to come here. He will be back with NYY

$12M for him is a good price. If healthy he will outperform that rate. If he remains healthy for 50% of a season, you are about breaking even. The question becomes then, will he be healthy for more than 50% of the rest of his career? I don't know.

I wouldn't make this move automatically, but if Seattle wanted to eat half his contract I would start listening.

You almost get the feeling that some fans want the Twins to get a big name just to make a splash in the national media.  Deals for guys like Cano and Grienke really serve no purpose other than that.  We don't have that kind of payroll to eat mistakes.

This team should be buiilding for 2 or 3 years down the road

But slams a trade for a 5 year contract lol.

Its weird how many people think Cano is suddenly unplayable after a PED suspension.  We are also in the wonderful league that offers a DH spot for players that can no longer field, if Cano ever gets to that point.  Still a good hitter and should be for at least 2-3 more years.

I like how the FO is only signing low risk contracts but somewhere along the way we will need to take a risk.  If any team can take on a $24M contract right now, it is us.  Cano fills a need at 2B, the AL Central won't be terrible forever.    I suggested it because this makes more sense than Goldy or Grienke IMO.  But I realize how unlikely it is, to be honest I'm not crazy about it either.  I was surprised the Grienke, Goldy crowd were not interested.

This is the best move we could possibly make to handcuff our team for the next 5 years.  If you thought the Mauer contract was annoying wait till we pick up someone else's problem with whom we have no history or ties here and wait 5 years for the contract to run its course.   I guess on the plus side he could be a help for Sano.

I'll pass on this one too.

The FO has worked hard to get to a point where there are no future contract obligations. I am sure they are going to sign some free agents that will change that, but I cannot imagine any remote possibility that they take on Cano’s contract. In addition to the fact that it’s a lousy idea that would be a dead weight on the team, I just don’t see them doing it.

It sounds like the prize for taking him and some of his salary off of Seattle's hands is Edwin Diaz. That change anyone's mind?

I wouldn't eat the whole salary, but I'd be interested. As long as Cano is still able to get on base he won't be a complete bust, and he looks like he's still got quite a bit of that ability left. And Minnesota is always a sucker for those milestone chases, he'll most likely be cashing in his 3,000 hit sometime in the next four years.

But he's got a 10-5 rights so he gets to say no if he doesn't want to come here.
