Twins trade Phil Hughes to Padres

They got a bag of balls (21 year old catcher still in Rookie ball). They also had to give up the 74th overall pick and cash. Hope it’s not a lot of cash

The article on MLBTR said about half of the $13.2M will be paid by the Padres for the final year of the deal. It's too bad they have to give up the pick, but hopefully that money will be spent elsewhere next year.

Posted

So Twins are paying all of this year and half of next year? Ouch. Thought the 74th pick would be worth more

Posted

But the catcher they got (Villalobos) may be the second coming of Gimenez--he's also pitched in a game.

I think that is a fair trade. We got filler and 6.6 million. With all the other money comming off the books next year, should be a fun offseason.

Comming off books

Mauer 23 million

Dozier 9 million

Escobar 5.5 million

Lynn 12 million

Duke 2 million

Hughes 6.6 million

Grossman 2 million (non tender candidate)

Thats 49.1 million and i dont know ig Gibson is a FA this offseason or next, and Morrisons option as well but i bet they pick that up if he keeps hitting the way he has in May vs April.

Do you think they pick up Santana at $14M? I don’t think it’s worth it.

We will have:

Berrios

Romero

Odorizzi

Gibson

Pineda

Gonsalves

Plenty of minor league depth

My math off or isn’t that 59M

No way. They probably aren’t going to pick up Erv even at a reduced price.

Right. So that’s another $14M off the books

There have been 53 pick 74s.

The Twins picked 74 in the very first draft and chose Graig Nettles. Great choice. Best 74 ever. David Cone is another great pick at 74. Unfortunately for the drafting teams, they never saw the fruits trading the two away for what turned out to be little return.

One other notable pick 74 with over 20 career WAR is Jim Clancy.

Two active pick 74s passed 10 WAR in Tyler Chatwood and John Jay.

The other 48 are unremarkable but the Twins can hope on Akil Baddoo.

Would you trade Baddoo for 6 million and a catcher? There better be some hope in the catcher.

This is a great move. Hughes might be better in Petco, but really the point is getting him off the books and not needing to worry about using him, either rotation or bullpen. It’s amazing they got anything, and doing so by only giving him one start was prudent too.

It's interesting you say this because the thought when he came to the Twins was he would do better at Target Field. And he did do better, at least until body parts started falling off. Zombiefication is a bad sign for any baseball player.

If he pitches well in the pen for the Padres, look for him to be in a Tigers uniform next year.

I feel very neutral about this, but I think it makes sense for the following reasons.

1) many have reported that this year's draft is much weaker than last year's

2) the twins had a lot less money to play with (especially after Lynn signing), so it wasn't super likely they could've drafted a high upside guy at pick 74 (like Enlow or Baddoo)

3) the twins effectively acquired two extra picks from the 2017 draft in Jacob Pearson and David Bañuelos, which helps to balance everything out

Plus, $6.6 million in next year's free agent market could get them a solid contributor to the 2019 team

not nothing, but no more or less certain than Villalobos

I wasn't talking about certainty, but I expect a draft pick in the top 100 is worth more than this particular catcher.

Lynn's signing has nothing to do with the draft pool money.

The other stuff I concur and hope they use the ~$7 million towards a real difference maker. Lord knows they have a lot of money coming off the books.

I thought they had to forfeit a pick for signing Lynn?

Ahh, bingo! I was thinking about the draft budget... Not the draft pick lost to acquire Lynn.

But doesn't forfeiting that pick also mean forfeiting that assigned portion of bonus pool?

Cederoth was the 79th pick, After 2 years they would have made that trade in a heartbeat.  Ryan Edes near that position. . Stuart Turner went for 100K,

Not a bad deal for dumping $7 million in payroll.  If another team offered to sell the 74th pick for $7 million do you think you would do it?

They also forfeit the money allotted to the pick they forfeited for signing Lynn. Meaning signing Lynn meant less money to play around with and potentially allot to other picks.

I'm still shocked that we got anything atall for Hughes, A shame that we also had to give up that draft pick. Yeah, it was not a high one, but a pick is still a pick, and sometimes those lower ones are keepers. But I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Good luck to Phil on the Left Coast!

Yeah you're right. I forgot about all of that.

I think Escobar is going to stay next season since he is still considered inexpensive.

I think he'll be gone and our payroll will decrease significantly.
