2.5m? Wow. That puts payroll at about 107m.

I would imagine the FO is using him as a stop gap until Gonsalves and Romero are ready or to hold the fort until Santana comes back. I'd be stunned if he makes more than 10 starts for us. I think this also means we're unlikely to land Lynn or Cobb.

Is this the Jason Marquis(esque) signing we've all been waiting for?    If all he is is a stop gap for 4-6 starts for Santana, then either DFA'd or long man in the bullpen, fine.   If he's literally anything else, barf.

I can be a little hyperbolic at times, but I'm pretty sure this signing might be the worst move they could have made.

Major league contract....WHY!

Sanchez literally has been the worst SP in baseball over the last three years, no? no?

They are paying him 2.5 million dollars, I doubt the plan is to keep him around for 5 starts at 500k a start.

It’s hard to see the positive vision behind this signing. For the last two years, all of his pitches, except his change, have been bad and his velocity has gone down. He can’t be part of a future plan, so he must be for the present. Maybe they consider the money to be so small that they won’t miss it if they let him go, but now they may need to cut someone else from the 40-man. The only reason it could make sense is if they think he’s better than Slegers and they want him around only for the time Santana is out. Even then, however, I would have preferred the Garcia deal.

Well, if you like xFIP, he was about as good as Berrios and Gibson last year ...

Honestly, he might be a bit better with a better OF defense than he was in Detroit. Not sure that'll be enough to fix the rest but he gets strike outs and limits the walks. He gives up too many home runs (that'll be a problem at TF) but Detroit had some truly bad outfields behind him as well. He had something like a .350 babip last year.

Word is that new pitching Guru Garvin Alston has spotted a major flaw with Sanchez' mechanics over the past three seasons.  The belief is that if they can get him to breathe through his eyelids and hold the ball like an egg, all will be cured.

Fingers crossed!

No, you’ve got it all wrong. The flaw is that he insists on aging.

Let me dream, would ya?

Well, when you don't want to trade prospects for top starting pitching and you aren't willing to pay the top free agent starting pitchers, this is what you get... Garbage. Only the names have changed in the Twins' front office. The bargain-bin mentality on starting pitching is alive and well at Target Field. They almost had me believing for a minute that things had changed, but this signing proves that we are in for more of the same old painful strategy that brought us memorable names like Jason Marquis, Mike Pelfrey, Ricky Nolasco and Kevin Corriea.

seriously any of the other three end of the rotation guys who have signed in the last two days would have been a better investment - if #Failvine wanted to burn 2.5M I could use some cash - Its been 20 years since my last competitive pitching performance but I am sure I could put up an ERA at least on par with this horses' ass

I'm surprised it's an MLB deal, but with a lower BABIP and a better HR % he could be serviceable. Interesting too that SIERRA calculates him as an above average pitcher; he did strike out almost 1 per inning so clearly he had something that was working. If the Twins think they can get good starts out him with something changing, pitch usage or sequencing or whatever, combined with solid defense, I say go for it.

I guess I'm indifferent.  This doesn't move the needle one way or the other very much compared to the other potential #5 starters or Slegers/Jorge. At this salary if he doesn't work out you move on.

The Twins could (I don't think they will but could) still sign Cobb/Lynn/Arrieta and that will have a much bigger impact on the Twins season than this signing.

In short... meh.  He's either alright and it doesn't matter or he's terrible and they cut him.

Now word is that the deal is NOT guaranteed.  I don't know the rules, but my guess is he won't pitch in AAA.  Either he earns a spot or is gone.  Maybe that's why no minor-league deal.

This is THE BEST they can do? Shoot, Chris Tillman would be a better signing than this. I guess we can forget on signing the better free agent starting pitchers...we just got our “stud”. This reeks of Sidney Ponson, Ramon Ortiz, Livan Hernandez, Kevin Correa, and Mike Pelfrey all over again. I thought the “new” FO was better than signing old retreads...so much for taking the “next step”.
