As I understand the rules, for the Atlanta players only, a team could use this year's pool or the pool from next year.  They could not, however, combine the two.  So they are either using $2.5mm from this year or $2.5mm from next year.  Considering they only had about $1.25mm remaining this year, it seems to be next year's money.  That is unless there was some provision in the Mariner's trade that it would be voided if they didn't get Ohtani, or perhaps the Twins would replace it with a prospect.  They cannot give them some of next year's money because these International monies cannot be traded until the year of use actually begins.

 

Another possibility is that the $2.5mm is not accurate.  Seems a lot for a kid who signed for less than that last year and gets to keep those dollars.  But maybe he looked great this past season and is worth it.

There are still plenty of teams holding international bonus money, not just the Mariners either. Could be the Twins are about to re-acquire some, plenty of folks here already thought they were nuts leaving some of the younger guys unprotected for the Rule 5. Does Kohl Stewart bring back a couple hundred K?

That changed this past year with the new CBA.  All teams now have the same amount of dollars, with the exception of a few teams getting about a half million extra because of certain factors.  I think this only affects a handful of teams, of which the Twins are one next year I believe.

The winning quote regarding Severino comes from CBS:

 

"Although it's unlikely that the infielder will see the major-league diamond in 2018, he projects to be a key part of the future in Minnesota."

 

Where do they find those people? 

 

He is a switch hitter, but as a lefty he hit a lofty .303/.365/.451.  That said he is probably the 8th or so best middle infielder the Twins have...

All else equal, a 17 year-old with a season in the GCL is a better signing than a 16 year-old who’s only played for his buscone.

One interesting fact/thought - Severino is the first prospect to sign for more than his initial bonus. Maybe the limits of the pool aren't as problematic as they are sometimes made out to be.

If the 2017 and 2018 pools can't be combined, I think the int'l money sent to the M's was returned and the deal perhaps voided.   1.25 (remaining) + 1 (from M's) + 200K (for Braves prospect) = 2.45 Mil, which is awfully close to the announced terms.

Three of the guys left signed for over $1mil. I wouldn't be opposed to using the $1.25 (plus $.3mil bonus) to sign a couple of the 6 left. Might as well at this point.

I think Severino might be the only one of the Braves prospects who really improved their stock since signing.

If I understand this all right, the Twins saved $3M from deciding not to sign Marte due to vision issues, and they were able to acquire C David Banuelos, OF Jacob Pearson, and INF Yunior Severino while using that $3M plus $1.5M from next year's international cap. Sounds like a good job to me!

They can't combine money for severino. They either need more this year, or spent next year's.

Not at all. Livan Soto was incredible, but he's a 70-glove shortstop, so he wouldn't really appeal the same way to the Twins as Severino, who's a certain 2B and not a SS.

 

Yefri Del Rosario certainly improved his scouting report as well. BA had an excellent Facebook Live that addressed this, as the normal amounts that you'd consider at July 2 don't come into play right now as only certain teams may be interested in certain profiles AND have money available.

I mentioned this in my article on the move over at Puckett's Pond, but Pena and Contreras would both make sense. Pena's always been a guy who profiled as a 3B, but he played SS in the DSL (and not well) due to the load of middle infield the Braves had in the GCL this year. Contreras is a fire-balling arm that doesn't have a ton of polish behind that yet, so he'd be a lottery ticket, but they've done well with that profile recently in the system.
