I know they can use next year's pool, but now I'm baffled by the trades a couple of days ago.

Do you have a link with the specifics? As far as I could tell even after the trades the Twins still had over a million left to spend from last year's pool.

Wow, Severino originally signed for 1.9m. Good for him.

From the fangraphs write up - https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-braves-punishment-is-in-and-its-harsh/

"Signed for $1.9 million out of the Dominican Republic, Severino is a switch-hitting middle infielder with surprising power for his size. Scouts think his long-term defensive home is second base and are skeptical about his long-term ability to make contact. He takes big, violent swings but still hit .286/.345/.444 in the GCL this year."

One of the 12 prospects granted free agency as part of the Braves' sanctions for violating international signing guidelines, Severino has to be considered one of the biggest losses for Atlanta. The 18-year-old was ranked as the No. 8 international prospect by Baseball America at the time of his agreement with Atlanta last summer, and will now become a part of the Twins' organization following one last workout in front of scouts earlier this week. In the Gulf Coast League last season, Severino slashed .286/.345/.444 with three home runs, 19 extra-base hits and 27 RBI in 48 games. Although it's unlikely that the infielder will see the major-league diamond in 2018, he projects to be a key part of the future in Minnesota.

So one of the Braves released international prospects just signed with the Twins. I don' thave time to get all the details about Yunior Severino, but I trust the community will fill in the blanks below.

One questions: I didn't think the Twins had $2.5M left in international money. Anyone know what's up?

I'm pretty sure Severino was in Atlanta's loaded system's top 20 prospects. I imagine he'd be in our top 15ish area. Nice get. He's got some work to do but he's increased his value after one season, which is a nice thing.

Somewhere around 1.2 M left left over from the trades plus what now comes back from Seattle right? Doesn't that put them very close to 2.5 M? Or is that way off?

It was certainly a good get. He could arguably be considered the best option out there from Atlanta. I very much endorse the move. But now it looks like they are going to sit out the elite international guys next year (perhaps that was already a foregone conclusion with the deals in place) after the two trades earlier.

Right. Those two guys they traded for are going to need to be good, because they are likely out of the elite level next year now.

They have less to spend next year. And, like Jim,I am now confused about the recent trades

Are there any penalties for using some of next years allotment? If there isn't couldn't they continue to use future money every year?

This is a once allowed thing, only for the braves prospects recently let free.

Twins might not be in on any of the top talent next year anyway.   My understanding is those relationships are built in advance of the signing period and the likely destinations for most of those kids are pretty well known in advance.

Huh. Really? Anyone have a source for this?

It's true. One time deal specifically for the Braves prospects set free this offseason.

Penalties? The federal government has been doing this for years.

Money is coming back from Seattle?

Maybe I misunderstood the deals with LA and Seattle but I thought they traded for the right to spend that 1M and if they don't it comes back to MN. Now that I'm thinking about I'm guessing they would obviously spend their budget so yeah....

In the past, I've always kind of been disappointed coming out of the winter meetings.  I got a feeling this year could be different.  They seem to have a pretty good idea of what they want and are pulling the trigger without hesitation.

That would be an interesting twist if the deal with the Mariners turned out to only be provisional upon them signing Ohtani or that the Twins would simply re-swap the funds should they fail in their pursuit.

Between the two players, the no-hit catcher would have been my vote to return anyway.

Given their pool for next year it was likely going to be tough to compete for the elite level guys anyway.  Severino also should be more of a known quantity since he was in MiLB this year.  They must have figured he was elite and they would get that elite prospect this year rather than next year.

They appear pretty loaded with solid prospects at the lower levels they are going to have to get rid of some if they want to sign or trade for more.  The DSL and GCL teams were very good last year so they have talent at those levels already.

Everyone had the same pool. Not sure I understand.

The Twins can use what's left of their 2017 pool and part of next year's pool to sign Severino. MLB decided it wouldn't be fair to those ATL players with the voided contracts to limit teams to this year's pool only. At 17-years-old, Severino ranked third in the GCL in doubles. Baseball America ranked him as their No. 15 prospect in the GCL, two spots behind Enlow. An exciting addition.

Thank you everyone for lending some info to this. So the Twins must've spent the remaining $1.2M or so from this year and dipped into next year's money, too.

It makes sense to do that if you're the Twins, because Severino is arguably the 2nd best prospect the Braves had to let go. The middle infielder signed with them for $1.9M and was the 8th best international prospect overall according to Baseball America. (Jelfrey Marte was #13 on their list.) He also had a nice debut in the GCL this year, as noted in previous comments. He just turned 18 years old in October.

The Twins played Seattle like a fiddle. There's a reason why their trade with the M's was announced prior to their deal with LAA. And then right after Ohtani makes his announcement, the Twins go out and sign the best player the Mariners could have invested those 2017 dollars in. Ouch. Well played, Falvine.

Not sure about that, this is from the mlbtraderumors article:

MLB teams will be allowed a fresh $200K of bonus pool space to work with to sign any of these prospects. They may elect to draw from either their current signing period pool allocation or that of the 2018-19 period (but not both).

So it is likely they have to use next year (and squander the bonus $200k), unless the trade to add space. That would be something.
