Ohtani is trying to become the first 2-way star since Babe Ruth. Ohtani is 23.

Hosmer signs with the San Diego Dads. 8/$144 that's front-loaded. $20 MM AAV for the first 5 years, and $13 MM AAV for the last 3 years of the contract.

I wonder if this will become the new norm for contracts.  Making it much easier to cut ties in the last couple of years and just eat the money.  Player gets paid either way, but more protection for the club if the player is real bad for a couple of years.

Without injuries, the Sox and Yankees are very likely in the playoffs, as are the Clevelands... That means there is really only one spot available, must likely. Gonna be tough.

JD Martinez struck a deal with the Red Sox with a 5 year, $110M with two opt-outs included. Seems like a pretty reasonable deal to me for the production Martinez has been able to bring with his bat.

They dealt an OF, for prospects, and signed a FA to replace him. I love how they do things sometimes.

 

4M?  Wow, I'd have happily done that as a fourth OF and DH option.

Looks like the D-Backs found their JD replacement.

 

They traded for Tampa OF Steven Souza in a 3 team trade with the Yankees. The Rays received 2 prospects back - LHP Anthony Banda from Arizona, and 2B Nick Solak from NYY.

 

Florida baseball teams suck.

I would have too, but I'd guess being a 3rd OF was more appealing to him. Not sure if that'll happen with the Rays, but it's probably more likely.

 

In my opinion the affordability of corner outfielders is all the more reason to trade Kepler if someone is over-valuing him as reported.

I see the reasoning on his end, but we could've given him regular at-bats without much issue.  But coming back to Minnesota may have been tough on him too.

 

He also has an unfair rep attached to him about being a bad sport.

I'm sure he could have gotten regular at bats, but it's probably easier to sell a free agent on an everyday gig in RF then a more hypothetical rotation of various OF and DH spots.

That's too bad, hope he can come back. Those labrum issues can be rough for power pitchers, ugh, not a good sign.

 

Looking back at all the debate about losing Alex Meyer in the Hector Santiago for Ricky Nolasco deal, we may end up finding out that Alan Busenitz was the only player involved in that transaction worth fussing over.

Tim Lincecum signs an MLB deal... You read that correctly, an MLB deal with the Texas Rangers. It sounds like he's going to be used as a reliever this season, which will be interesting to see!

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports the Royals have reached a one-year, $6.5 million deal with 3B Mike Moustakas.

The deal is still pending a physical. Moustakas will earn a $5.5 million base salary with another $2.2 million available in performance bonuses. The contract also includes a mutual second-year option for $15 million or a $1 million buyout. If the option gets picked up, it would bring the deal's total value to $22.7 million. Moustakas probably regrets turning down Kansas City's qualifying offer, which would have paid him $17.4 million for 2018.

You don't say? It seems Moustakas severely overestimated the market and he's somehow losing $10M from not taking the qualifying offer. I'm shocked he couldn't have landed a bigger deal.

So the Royals are paying Mike Moustakas who had his best year last year and who fills a need at 3B $6.5M to return and the Rockies are paying Carlos Gonzalez who had his worst year last year and who they have no room for $8M to return.

 

Some teams are better at this stuff than others. Colorado makes some of the most bizarre decisions each and every year.

The Phillies have reached a multiyear agreement, pending a physical, with free agent right-hander Jake Arrieta, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports on Twitter. It’ll be a three-year, $75MM contract for the Scott Boras client, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets.

Arrieta's still getting a substantial amount of money, even for the slow offseason. He's making $30M in 2018, which is too rich for my taste.

That is interesting.....if he's good he gets at least 115 million....if he's bad, he gets 75 million. It's almost like, ya, teams do still spend real money on the elite players....

 

I think, as some have said, teams are figuring out $/win should not be linear. A 4 WAR player has more value than 4 one WAR players....
