Good. Bring up Gonsalves. He's ready. In his last 2 starts alone, well over 60% of his pitches were strikes. He's going into the 7th inning consistently on a decent pitch count. He's using all his pitches. Striking batters out. Great command. What more do you want. Replace lefty with lefty. Come on FO, do it.

I would assume he is just the filler until a starter is needed on Friday. On a side note I'd bet on it not being Gee as he has already thrown 36 pitches and I'm not sure at all but I would bet they don't throw too many more than 30 on a bullpen day.

Gibson and Mejia should not be mentioned in the same context.

 

Remember that Mejia is a rookie and a was legit prospect, not another retread. He's doing well and lumping him with Gibson for 'inconsistency' is absurd.

Romero and Jorge have the advantage of being on the 40-man roster and probably have a few more innings in them than Gonsalves, although Gonsalves should get a call to AAA sooner rather than later.

 

It all comes down to 40-man roster management. Do the Twins take a looksee at Gee first, then add abck Heston. What do they have in the wings for long relief, something they have been lacking since the season began (Haley?). 

 

Will any of the current arms start to implode (Duffey, Pressly, Rogers...Kintzler?).

 

Santiago is a wash. The Twins couldn't not offered him arbitration and been where they would be if they cut bait with him right now...just wasted some salary on a year in which they didn't spend the money they had to spend.

 

Kintzler will also be a free agent. Is there a closer in any of the prospects, or any of the other bullpen arms you really need to keep?

 

What to do with Hughes, who would be an expensive RELIEVER. What to do with Perkins. Will he come back? What to do with Trevor May? Those are pretty valuable roster spots.

They have alternatives, just as the Twins do: claim AAAA arms like Adam Wilk, Chris Heston and Dillon Gee off waivers. Would you rather watch those guys start games, or watch your top prospects learn and develop under your big-league staff? That's the question here. I'm not necessarily saying Houston's approach is correct but given the immense success their franchise is experiencing I'm inclined to give it some cred. 

Heston, Wilk and Gee have a combined 1 start  between them for the Twins.  Nor are they doing much at Rochester, either. They hardly enter into the equation of Twins pitching.  Gee at one point was a serviceable starter. There is nothing wrong with having him in Rochester to see if there is anything left.

 

With Jorge's one start there wasn't anything that said don't start him again. As Santiago is on the DL it is likely he will get the call. Like with Houston, at this point it is their best option.  You found one exceptional talent that could be promoted quickly. The results for the other two are less certain. 2 young pitchers on the roster with little high minors experience for a half season with an ERA over 5 the board would be all over the FO about rushing players

Hopefully by this point the new Twins management has implemented a separate and distinct development plan for each pitcher in the system. I doubt that has anything to do with the major league teams won/loss record. We have had years of abject failure by Twins coaching staff and management in the devlopment of pitcher after pitcher brought to the majors. We can go back 20 years and see articles by national writers on the Twins failures to develop major league pitchers.

I don't care if the three mentioned, Romero, Gonsalves or Jorge make it this year, next spring, next summer or whenever as long as it looks like they have a chance to succeed once they get here. Going back and forth between the majors and the minors may be part of the process, but coming up and getting destroyed shouldn't be.

If our coaching and management staff has a short lease anywhere its not this years  won/ loss record or even next years, but the ability to bring developed pitchers to the big league team who are ready to compete.

My guiding principle is that You should get pitchers to the majors as soon as feasible. Arms only have so many pitches in them, and nobody knows what that number is. So I say go ahead and populate the rotation with prospects. They can't be significantly worse than Santiago.

I just like thinking about Sept 2018 when potential starters could be Berrios (24 - RHP), Gonsalves (24 - LHP), Jorge (24 - RHP), Romero (23 - RHP), Mejia (25 - LHP) and let's not forget Trevor May (29 - RHP) should be back from Tommy John.  Santana has on option for 2019, but will probably at his peak value trade-wise, this winter.  I'm encouraged by Mejia's progress.  Sugarplums are dancing in my head with this potential young controllable rotation.  'Course, the best laid plans, so let's not go crazy.

Very unlikely they all work out, and even if they do, decent chance it is a group of 4ish type starters (especially Gonsalves, Jorge, Mejia, May).

In my opinion, I'd like to see Romero, Gonsalves and Jorge moved up to AAA Rochester after the AAA All Star game, and join Slegers in that rotation.

 

Adalberto Mejia has been pretty solid his last three starts. Gibson's shown some signs in like 6 of his 8 starts since coming back. That buys a little time.
