Nick Nelson Site Manager Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 The Twins officially announced today that they've moved Trevor May to the 60-day disabled list following his Tommy John surgery, and purchased the contract of Craig Breslow, who replaces him on the 40-man roster. This confirms what we've long suspected: Breslow will be one of the bullpen lefties. Ryan O'Rourke will open the season on the DL with a flexor strain, leaving Taylor Rogers and Buddy Boshers to battle for the likely second and final southpaw role. Rogers is a fairly clear favorite in that race.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Alright, let's hope Breslow's new pitching technique will do him well. IMO the best case scenario for him is to pitch really well like Abad did last season and flip him for a prospect at the deadline. Though we didn't do so well getting something back for Abad... Anyways, I think the bullpen should end up being:KintzlerPresslyBelisleBreslowRogersChargoisDuffey (maybe as a long reliever at first, then eventually converting to a long-term standard-length reliever.)

DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 What so the Twins see in Haley? Game day, bullpens, etc, what do they see and do they like it/him enough? If they do, 2 of Duffey, Berrios and Mejia begin the season in Rochester. I also would not give up on Sunday as a starter just yet. From being experienced, being LH and being a good teamate, im kind of excited for Breslow. But Jay, Melotakis and others, his sexond tour with the Twins may not be a long one.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Probably not my first choice to add Breslow, but oh well. I expect a ton of churning through options in the bullpen. If he's not good, he should be the first to get cut.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Sunday?sexond? Doc, you in your meds again? LOL! Believe it or not, that was supposed to say "Duffey" but auto correct and my eating lunch didn't mesh too well. At least...thats my story And I'm sticking to it.

Liquid lunches are known to do that... and liquid lunches are essential when following the Twins.

I am also guessing your "In slow" the other day was supposed to be "Breslow" * though with respect to his fastball, "in slow" has a ring of truth to it

OMG...I know I text and post too quickly at times, but I am truly a very, very young and vibrant 51yo. Am I turning in to Chief? Lol All due respect.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 I fully admit to a few adult "pops" while posting once in a while, but man, I need to be less impatient and re-read my posts better to look for goofs before I click the "post" button. Pretty soon "DocBauer" is going to look more like "DocBrown" or worse "ReverendJim".
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 Sometimes, as is my personality I guess, I get as eager to post something as Samuel L Jackson is to recite his next lines of "M..... F.....!" Wait, this a real post and not a game thread, right? Better slow my roll before I get my first warning points. Lol
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 On a serious note, I really do get what Falvey and Levine are doing. And really, that deserves a thread or at least a blog of its own. I mean, we all play GM in our spare time, but look where they are sitting as they come in. They are inheriting a team that doesn't exactly have a lousy history or one that hasn't achieved greatness or goodness at various times. Despite some poor seasons lately, this is NOT some downtrodden, woe is me franchise. There is real talent to work with and build on. But if you took over a franchise, and had hope and a vision, with a core of some really nice young players in place, and more in the pipeline, but a few rough seasons to this point, what would you do? Catching kind of stunk. So you go out and sign a top catcher to help the position and help your staff. Beyond that, not sure what else you have for sure, you sign a good clubhouse guy you know and trust for a backup spot. Unsure about your pen...since you can't fix your rotation with a singular Batman type swoop...you sign a solid veteran like Belisle and a flier like the experienced and smart Breslow. (I still would have rolled the dice on a closer rebound). Breslow is no major move, or savior of any kind. But he IS "crafty" in that he is experienced and smart and embracing the very kind of pitching analytics we are talking about the Twins employing. I don't even care if he is "flipable" for a prospect down the line. He provides my team with, potentially, a quality, veteran LHRP for the moment, while guys like Jay and Melotakis get ready to supplant him. I see this is as a small movement forward, for a forward thinking new regime, in the bigger picture of what is to come.
drjim Provisional Member Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 I'm not surprised they slow played the roster coming in for many of the reasons you said, but I am a quite surprised they have made a total of 0 trades, big or small. Perhaps wise, just so uninspiring.

Patience is a virtue and I am willing to give Falvey- Levine the deserved time. It's just maddening to see no flashy moves or a total youth movement or heads rolling or just anything different.

The roster tweaking will be a little bit at the deadline and then offseason it will be more robust. Don't expect a lot of flashy moves at any point.
