diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Also, Jose Bautista related: His career numbers at Target Field: 21 games played, .349/.429/.895 (1.324 OPS!!) 14 HR 23 RBIIt may be a pipe dream, but I'd call him up today to see if he wants to rebuild his value with the Twins. Well, he had to face Twins pitching to put that record up. Monkeypaws 1

SF Twins Fan Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Looks like there could be some other movement now that Boston traded for Sale. Mike Berardino @MikeBerardino 8m8 minutes agoBuchholz due $13.5 M in final year. Some offset likely required there.Pomeranz projected $4.7 M as 4+ arb. Drafted by both TEX/CLE. Mike Berardino @MikeBerardino 12m12 minutes agoSale fallout could lead #RedSox to make Buchholz and/or Pomeranz available. Hearing #mntwins could have interest but have yet to engage.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Much more interested in Pomeranz than Buchholz. Jorge or Stewart + someone else for Pomeranz. Let's make it happen! wsnydes, nytwinsfan, HitInAPinch and 2 others 5

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Don't mind getting Pomeranz, but doesn't he only have 2 or 3 more seasons of control? Kind of similar to ESan in that capacity. He's younger, which is a plus, but I'm guessing he's going to cost a lot... probably more like Jorge AND Stewart + someone else. nicksaviking 1

Was making $1.35 MM in 2016... So he's probably on the same projection as Gibson? Maybe $3-4 mill for 2017 and who knows in 2018.

I'm interested in Pomerantz if his value is based more on his AL numbers with Boston, not his NL numbers in San Diego. Because Boston can't really pretend that the pitcher you saw last year in SD is the guy you'll be getting, no Padre pitcher has put up the same numbers after they leave that team. Not one of any significance anyway.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 Let's not give up pitching prospects (whom could benefit from change in pitching philosophy) for a Redsox starter. We have other assets to deal; let's not further thin-out our minor league starting pitching depth in the name of mid rotation veterans... SF Twins Fan 1

If he doesn't see anything in Stewart or the other guys I'd be alright with him swapping them for guys he does like. Though, I'd only see him doing that for other minor leaguers and not MLB guys.

My point is that if part of the problem with our pitchers in the upper minors is that they have been underdeveloped because of resources and/or philosophy, does Falvey really know what he has in Stewart, Jay, Jorge, etc.? I'd prefer to see how the young guys respond to the regime changing, than to judging them by their results under the old regime. Comrade Bork, diehardtwinsfan, twinssouth and 2 others 5

So trade for a lefty in Pomeranz who for the first time in his career pitched more than 100 innings(170 2/3) and then trade Ervin Santana for prospects? What do you gain besides saving a little money and hoping that it works out in the end? Sorry, I am not drinking that kool-aid. PseudoSABR 1

I'd rather keep Santana, I think.....OTOH, Pomeranz is under control for 1 more year than ESAN, and for much less money....OTTH, they do need a veteran SP, imo, to mentor the younger pitchers....and Gibson isn't that guy.

Sorry, I am not drinking that kool-aid.Pomeranz was relegated to the bullpen from 2013-2015 and did pretty well last year back in the rotation. Sounds like someone we could estimate pitching 180-200 innings next year if he's on some team's rotation. With Santana it's simply selling high after a good season, and getting out of the contract before that comes to bite the Twins. I think it's pretty risky to anticipate another great season from him. 34 years old, a lot of wear and tear on that arm, and a couple of clunker seasons in his past. Full disclosure, my ulterior motive is to find suitable trade partners for both Dozier and Ervin this offseason. HitInAPinch 1
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 Good stuff in this article from Rhett Bollinger on what Falvey/Levine are doing during hte meetings, getting calls on Ervin Santana, Brandon Kintzler and Kennys Vargas, new scouts, and more.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 You can't just sign guys, they have to agree. No one jumps on board with a 106 loss team to likely have to move their family mid-season.Actually you see several free agents do this every single season. If he can be had on a 1 year deal then he likely doesn't have a ton of options.

Richie the Rally Goat Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Never imagined Ramos in a Rays uniform. I like the gamble by them.im shocked too, but at 30% of some of the deals being spoken of before the knee...
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Wow, Rays continue to outclass the Twins every step of the way. They get Ramos on a fantastic two year deal, and we get stuck with a 1.0-1.5 WAR catcher for 3 years in Castro.Old habits die hard I suppose, Falvey/Levine should have completely cleaned the rest of the toxic front office house when they had the chance.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I'd also be willing to bet anyone that Ramos gives a nice amount of more value in 2 years (1.5 years) then Castro does in 3 years for this team (one extra pitch frame strike per game included!)
SF Twins Fan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 There is also a very good chance Ramos doesn't catch at all next season or ever again.
