Ron Gardenhire spent a quiet 2015 away baseball with the only significant mention of his name being as a possible replacement in Detroit when rumors surfaced about Brad Ausmus being fired.

When Gardy and the Twins parted ways, he owned a 1068-1039 record, although his career was really two distinct chapters - the first 9 years in which his teams were 147 games over .500 and the last 4 years in which his teams were 118 under.

As baseball becomes more and more focused on analytical methods to augment traditional scouting and slowly rewrites it official "book" does Gardenhire still garner interest as a potential big league manager?

short answer is yes, Gardenhire will find another opportunity as a manager.

Long answer is still yes. There's too many examples of re-tread manager hires, and some managers take multiple years off to find the right fit. Detroit probably would have been a good fit for Gardy, with a lineup full of veterans, and a rotation full of low k/pitch to contact guys. Maybe by this time next year he will be the Tigers manager, or another team can come out of the woodwork to hire him.

I thought he'd get a job but we'll see.  He's older than I think - nearly 60 now - so he might not.  I thought he'd take a position with the Padres but it doesn't sound like it.

You realize there are several managers older than Gardenhire, right? Including our own manager Molly...

Joe Maddon, Terry Collins, Bruce Bochy, Pete Mackanin, Clint Hurdle, Dusty Baker, Buck Showalter, Ned Yost.... It's not like Gardenhire from an age standpoint is a dinosaur to be a manager.

EDIT: Gardy's philosophy may be prehistoric, but his age isn't :)

Which is just the opposite of Chief ... his age may be prehistoric, but his philosophy isn't.

I could see him waiting for the right job, or going into broadcasting. I can't see him taking some dump franchise with no hope.

Seattle actually seems like a perfect fit for him.

He interviewed with San Diego twice... isn't that kind of the definition of a dump franchise with no hope?

No, I think San Diego would be a good fit, their current GM is slightly insane, but they have enough money to compete. The media is fine etc

The Rangers or Astros seem like good fits as well, but I doubt those jobs come available soon.

They have a pretty poor major league roster, with some bad contracts on the books, and a bottom tier farm system.  I guess if that is the definition "the right job", 28 other teams fit as well.

This is their opening day payroll ranks;

2012- 30th

2013- 25th

2014- 21st

2015- 22nd

I think if the Tigers are bad again, he gets the job. I wonder if he'll continue to pursue a job in late 2016, if it comes to that.

To be fair, they had an ownership change only a few years ago... but I'll go as far as to say it's one of the worst 3 jobs in baseball (except of course you get to live in San Diego..)

True - I believe Chief was tutored in philosophy by Plato -- so his philosophy would be more classical.

I doubt that he ever manages again, but if he does, I'd love it if it happens in Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City or Cleveland (in that order pretty much.)   Hope that Andy and Scotty are part of that package too...

I highly doubt he ever manages in the majors again

It's rare for me to agree with USAF, but I do – Gardenhire's managing days are done. If he's willing, he could probably be a coach – then become a manager again.

I like to think that Gardy missed out on the job in San Diego because he made it a package deal with Andy. Good riddance to that crew.

I still think the Twins missed out on signing Rollie Fingers as a pitching coach
