jokin Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 A beat writer isn't likely to have just made this up out of whole cloth, but could it possibly be allowable for a major league pitcher to start in the deciding game of a Class A playoff series? Mike Berardino @MikeBerardino 17h17 hours agoMike Berardino retweeted Jeff JohnsonMaking a Monday rehab start for Phil Hughes a little more possible. Second round is best-of-3 too, so no guarantees. Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 The question is.... is he actually the best guy for that high leverage start?
sane Provisional Member Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 If Bill Belichick was the Cedar Rapids manager.......
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 Been done before. Not doubting you, but... any citations?
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 It's all moot for now. Hughes will supplant Pelfrey on Tuesday: "Both Class A Cedar Rapids and Double-A Chattanooga could have playoff games on Monday, but (nei)their of those would be guaranteed until Sunday afternoon at the earliest. As a result, the Twins opted to bring Hughes directly back to their rotation after he threw an additional 15 pitches in the bullpen on Wednesday."

I was pretty sure it had happened before at some higher MiLB level... and is a part of MLB written rules. Not sure how well that would play around a Low A league though- for a top-line pitcher to be starting in the clinching game of a playoff round... unwritten rules and all.

Hughes will supplant Pelfrey on Tuesday:Just read the article, and it didn't sound like Pelfrey is getting supplanted... Veteran right-hander Mike Pelfrey will remain part of a loosely configured six-man rotation For all those people who wanted a 6-man rotation earlier this year, well, here you go.

For all those people who wanted a 6-man rotation earlier this year, well, here you go. Yeah, the rotation situation seems a bit fluid, but in point of fact, Pelfrey is being supplanted for one game- bumped from the Tuesday start and isn't scheduled to start again until Saturday and here's the actual headline from the article in question: Twinsights: Phil Hughes to start Tuesday, Mike Pelfrey on ice So... I guess the starting situation has turned a little chilly, too. And based on the unclear nature of the clubhouse uncertainty on this matter of the 6-man rotation according to the author, a little foggy, too.

I'd prefer that Santana at this point stays on the traditional 5 day schedule though.... The history of success for 6-man rotations isn't too extensive, the latest attempted failure being the Mets. After defending the 6-man experiment for the first couple months and dealing with the managerial angsting, the internal pissing and moaning and the external second-guessing, here's what Terry Colllins had to say about the 6-man: “I’ve pretty much had my fill of this 6-man rotation stuff. I may go to a two man — it’s been a pain in the (butt),” Collins said. “(pitching coach) Dan Warthen and (GM) John Ricco and I just met, Dan I met earlier today, Dan and I met last night.“I like Dan a lot, but I am tired of sitting with him.” Funny stufff by Collins, I think I could be persuaded to pull for the Mets in the NL in the postseason. Meanwhile, back to the Twins, this sounds more like a game of 5-seated musical chairs... the music is bound to stop for someone. Hughes, Duffey, and especially Pelfrey, are all major question marks as to their level of effectiveness going into the stretch run. I like your thinking about Santana, though. The Twins talk about resting young and tired arms, but Santana doesn't need any rest, skip another Duffey/Pelfrey turn if either is ineffective. Under the current 6-man set-up, Santana would pitch in Game 162 to close out the season.vs. Kansas City I'd rather he get one extra start before then, thus setting him up for throwing in Game 159 on October 1 vs. Cleveland, and setting him up for a possible Game 163 one-game playoff start, or helping to clinch the wild card in a relief role on short rest in game 162, on October 4 vs. the aforementioned Royals.

Given the overall equity of all the pitchers in the rotation, swapping out guys who are wearing down isn't going to have much of an impact.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 I know Berardino reported earlier that Santana would be ineligible for any game 163 tiebreakers too. Did that get corrected? I think it makes sense -- MLB doesn't want to confer an advantage to any suspended player over another suspended player, in terms of availability beyond the scheduled 162 game season, based on the timing of their suspension.

Old Twins Cap Verified Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Elephant in the room: If Twins make playoffs, they lose Santana. Wouldn't it be nice to have Phil Hughes ready to pitch big games? That's the bottom line here.
DJL44 Verified Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Glad they've decided they don't want Pelfrey pitching in the playoffs. That would mean playoff rotation of Milone for the WC game, then Gibson, Duffey and Hughes if everyone keeps taking their regular turn. I think I'd try to use the off day to give the WC game to Gibson.

It just wouldn't figure that a guy who has served his suspension would be excluded from a Game 163.

Partly a function in that he is a prolific shoot from the hip tweeter. At least he made the correction when proven to be wrong.

mnfireman Verified Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 IF all 6 guys can pitch effectively down the stretch, Molitor should try to get them set up for the post-season. That and get his starting line-ups set and working together. Gotta love it, a "rookie" manager thrown right into the thick of a play-off race, with a rookie pitching coach. Hope they can pull it off and get the team there.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Don't think we can worry much about setting up for the postseason yet.

At least he made the correction when proven to be wrong. It was an easy mistake to make. The game 163 stipulation exists but only for players under a 162 game suspension, which makes sense. A player can't be suspended for an entire season and then get to appear for a single game playoff.
