nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Say what you will about the Twins front office (and I sure as hell do!) but they don't seem nearly as shortsighted as the Mets. They are the first team that doesn't have their pick protected (15th) and they give it up to sign a 36-year-old who couldn't stay healthy last year? Classic Mets! I love Cuddyer, but I thought he would be crazy not to try to work out a deal to stay in Colorado. I thought free agent hitters had foresaken Queens with the hope of not fading away into obscurity. You have to think they're going to try to be like the Orioles from last year. Now that they've already lost their #1 pick, they're going to say "screw the draft" and try to sign a buch of players with a QO. I'm guessing most free agents are going to be wise enough to stay away though unless the money is stupid.

PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 The only way this makes sense is if the Mets plan to sign more than few comp-eligible FAs. As for Cuddy, he must have wanted to get out of Colorado; he probably nets more money if he takes the QO and tries for a two year contract next offseason.

If he isn't healthy, what could he sign for in 2016. If he is healthy, you'd have to see what Torii Hunter gets this round and compared to last to decide if you get $5-7 or $8-10. It's a pretty safe bet to do the two years in New York, although his expenses will be higher. Don't know if the selling of yourself is also higher being a Met than a Twin or a Rockie, in the longrun. But Colorado was good to him as a hitter. Let's see what happens in the Big Apple! But the one sure bet to take a QO is the one that didn't.
IowaTwin346 Provisional Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Good for him. To get a 2 year deal coming off of an injury plagued year. I thought that the QO was going to be a slam dunk, but for him to get 2 years at 36 he can then decide to hang it up or play year to year until 40.
D. Hocking Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I suppose at this point he wanted a second year, but I really thought he would stay in CO.

Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I would have taken the QO. 1 year $15M > 2 Years $21M at least in my opinion.

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 So when will the Rockies file tampering charges against the Mets? Because there's no way in hell Cuddyer turns down that QO and signes this fast unless he already had a deal in place.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Cuddyer signing with the Mets might simply be his desire to play closer to his home in NC. Just a thought.
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 He averaged 93 games a year over the 3 years in Col. Not sure what the Mets are thinking even if they didn't lose the draft pick it would be stupid, imo.

Kwak Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Let's focus on what's really important to the Twins--Cuddyer didn't sign with the Twins! Good Luck to him, but for me I want to know what the Twins are going to do rather than what they didn't do.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 A good player, great person who was drafted and came up with and developed into a very good player as a Twin makes good. Is it more than we (as pretend Twins GMs) would pay him? Sure. Is he worth 2/21? Apparently, and good for him. My only thought on this is good for him. Hopefully he can stay healthy and keep playing well.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 That's just hard to believe, given his age, health, and the draft pick. wow.
Brandon Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Cuddyer is easily worth the 2/21 million but not with the 15th pick in the draft as well. Unless the Mets feel they are that close to contending again. They do have extra pitchers so they may feel they are just a couple of hitters away. I know they need a SS and the Mets are talking to the Rockies about Tulowitzcky. if they don't get him they can get Escobar and their offense will be upgraded significantly as Cuddyer helps and their SS were terrible last year. I think there will be a lot of activity after watching the Royals go to the World series last season and a lot of teams probably feel they are just a few players away. Back on the Cuddyer front since that is the main story he is originally from West Virginia and he is friends with Wright and Cuddyer I don't think needs that huge payday anymore so why not have a better lifestyle then make an extra 3-5 million over 2 years.
kab21 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 It only takes one team to sign a FA but I really thought Cuddyer would have no chance at signing with a non-Rockies team.
Brandon Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Also I wonder if there is some pressure from the Union not to accept a QO as no one has done it yet.

Make sure you give Terry Ryan a hug and thank him for having a long term vision the next time you see him.

And...Hahahahaha! Cuddyer really is a magician!yeah. Three years older and more injury-prone, he's getting the same annual value he got on the Rockies deal.

Makes the Willingham deal (but not the results) look like a great magic trick by Ryan in hindsight. Who can predict what salaries will ever be in baseball these days.
tobi0040 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 The 35 year old injury prone outfielder over the 15th pick is a suckers bet. Let alone the 21 million Everyone thought the rockies were crazy for the qo. Now they look smart What you have is a gm trying to keep his job and mortgaging the future. They won 66 games last year. So cuddy is not pushing them over the top
old nurse Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 The Mets must like former Colorado OF. A part time Cuddyer is still better than Eric Young for the Mets. They must have very little in their upper minor leagues for outfielders. Drafting is a crap shoot. FWIW, the last 15th selection to produce was Stephan Drew. If the Mets get a couple of solid Cuddyer type years they are probably ahead
brvama Provisional Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I'm surprised he didn't take the QO, but a 2 yr deal might be all he wanted. Maybe he is thinking after that he will call it quits. Accepting the offer poses a big risk if he should continue to have health problems. I also agree with Brandon about getting closer to home and his Wright freindship may have some influence. As far as the Mets, I'm stunned.
