Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Let the speculation begin... or become enhanced. Baseball America's Ben Badler learned that the Twins have voided their $3 million deal with Dominican SS Jelfrey Marte for something that came out during a recent physical. According to the article, it is believed to be something related to his vision. UPDATED - Per JJ Cooper, this does not give the Twins an extra $3 million. They have $3.2 million to spend internationally still. http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/twins-void-3-million-contract-dominican-shortstop-jelfry-marte/
Tom Froemming Twins Daily Contributor Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Holy smokes! Do you ever remember anything like this happening, especially with such a high-profile signing?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Wow, this is a potential game changer for the Twins...
Jerr Verified Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Something must be in the works, and the Twins' front office? Sure are not acting like that of old....
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 15, 2017 Author Posted November 15, 2017 Holy smokes! Do you ever remember anything like this happening, especially with such a high-profile signing? I'm sure it has. I can't think of an example.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 15, 2017 Author Posted November 15, 2017 Please note... I have updated the original post after JJ Cooper tweeted that this does not give the Twins an extra $3 million. Likely, this decision on Marte was made a few weeks ago and that's why the Twins go to $3.2 million available... Otherwise, they would have been at $0.2 million.
Jerr Verified Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Well, hopefully this does not blowup, on the Twins' medical staff as a misdiagnosis
Tom Froemming Twins Daily Contributor Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Man, I sure hope the Twins are able to do something with that $. Kind of a bummer things didn't work out, Marte was a very highly thought of prospect.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Real bummer. Hope the kid is ok in the long run.

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 It seems odd that no one here has implicitly stated the obvious conspiracy theory involving the Twins and international bonus money. Just so we're clear, we have silently decided as a group not to not speak out loud the name of everyone's most hopeful holiday wish baseball player?

What could this possibly have to do with Yu Darvish
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 It seems odd that no one here has implicitly stated the obvious conspiracy theory involving the Twins and international bonus money. They found out he's Roy Moore's illegitimate son?
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 15, 2017 Author Posted November 15, 2017 But there were reports before Marte's release came out that the Twins had something like 3m+ (along with Yankees and I think the Rangers). https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/latest-on-shohei-otani-4.html MLBTraderumors says we have 6m+ https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/twins-void-contract-of-international-signee-jelfry-marte.html There's definitely some confusion here. I'll trust JJ Cooper and Ben Badler, but obviously MLBTR usually is pretty accurate too. I looked it up. The Twins went into the International signing period with $5.25 million to spend. I don't have a full listing of who all they have signed. I know there were two other big name guys besides Marte that they signed. $5.25 million + the $0.5 million from the Nationals (Kintzler trade) = $5.75 million total.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 15, 2017 Author Posted November 15, 2017 JJ Cooper clarifies: To try to clear up any confusion. The AP reported last week the Twins had $3.2 million to spend internationally. The Marte voided deal was $3 million of that $3.2 million they have available, but the Marte voiding wasn't known publicly til @BenBadler reported it today.

Winston Smith Verified Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 My guess is the other 4 players used up the other 2+ mill in money. If Urdaneta and Andijar signed for anything over $300k that would likely use up the money. Jelfry Marte, ss, Dominican Republic (No. 13 prospect), $3 million.Carlos Aguiar, of, Venezuela (No. 30 prospect) $1,000,000Luis Baez, of, Dominican Republic, $300,000.Nomar Urdaneta, ss, Venezuela ??$Jose Andujar, of, Dominican Republic ??$

For this to make sense Urdaneta and Andujar had to sign for a total of 1.25 million. Which for some reason I don't believe, but have nothing to back that up.
twinsfanstreif Provisional Member Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I don't know why that wouldn't have been factored into this... I'm sure it was.So prior to trading Kintzler and this move we were 250k over our allotment?

I'm pretty sure they signed more than just these five players. I would bet another 10-12 players, at least, and most of them for over the $10K that goes into the math.

If the Twins have been widely reported to have around $3M that could be used to sign Otani, and we all know the Twins started with $5.25M and added $500k, as well as the widely reported $3M signing bonus to Marte, how did nobody do the math and ask how $3M bonus money left was possible?

Guest Guests Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 You have to wonder what they found wrong with the eyes of a 16 year-old. Most things can be fixed simply. Is there any kind of legal risk for cutting him if the medical report is insignificant?
