This is a learning curve for Royce.  If you watch the replay, Rodriguez dances into Lewis's throwing lane and he panics.  Had he made the decision to throw home right away, Arozarena is dead at home.  It sucks that every new situation at a new position you have to learn the hard way, but you do.  There will be better days for Lewis.

That was the easy double play. He had two ways to complete the double play. And by several steps. Pathetic mental lapse.

The play was to catch the ball and throw to second base and then receive the return throw for a double play. The mistake was stepping on the bag. Shelton actually stated that that is what they expected to happen when they shifted to five infielders.

Earlier in the season, yes, all about winning series’s. But with 50 games to go, and this many teams in it, that is a minimum must. Now, it will be about which team(s) can go on a meaningful winning streak. The rest of the series winners only will be watching on TV with the rest of us.

No real reason to be too excited about it. Stuff happens.

I will point out (not to you but just generally) that many people suggest that first base is an easy position to play. It may require the least amount of athleticism and the most amount of baseball acumen. 

I think Royce has been pretty good over at first base. He is better at first than he was at third and he is also better than anyone else on the roster except for Clemens at first base.

The play is to 2nd, then back to 1st and Randy’s run doesn’t matter. Cal Raleigh isn’t fast.

There's only a couple of choices on how to look at this.  You can accept that he is learning a new position on the fly and will make tough mistakes.  I advocated for his move to first in the offseason so we wouldn't be going through this learning curve in August.  Had they committed to this, Bell likely doesn't get signed and we save money which could have put into the bullepen at the beginning of the season.  Shelton stayed the course to see how the players would react before making wholesale changes.  Lewis is a professional and knows he messed up and will learn. 

The other option is to fire him into the sun, or the baseball equivalent, DFA him and move on.  I guess you could send him to St. Paul.  That option almost automatically leads to a combo of Bell, Caratini, and Jackson playing 1B.  Clemens is not a permanent option there as they need his flexibility to plug holes elsewhere in the lineup.  Idk if it's true, but I would bet that Lewis is still a better defensive option than the combination of Bell, Caratini, and Jackson at 1B.
