It was an infield single and he is hitting .190 with a .542 OPS over almost 200 plate appearances. I am looking at the other 70 games where he has done nothing. And his defense looks average to me. Are we a contender or not, if we are then he needs to either be on the bench or in St. Paul. JD-TWINS and umterp23 1 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 1 Posted August 1 I continue to wonder why anyone wants to demote Matthews from being a starter. Nice win. Nice to see the power back. If they keep Jeffers, I want him at first or DH. As a catcher only, we're getting a couple dozen games. If you are really buying and trying to win, actually try to win. Also, Gray? Ugh. umterp23 1

Yes, but that makes the QO a better strategy. He may make more in 2027 by accepting the QO, but this is the time for him to get the huge mutli-year deal. He's far more likely to get a five year deal now than a year from now when he's 30, so he'll take the larger guarantee and leave us the draft pick as a parting gift. Shaitan 1

But there could be a domino effect. You never know. The Twins do need starting pitching depth, You have to wonder about Ryan. Maybe the plan is to reduce his workload for a period of time. Kremer has been injured, and horrendous this year when active. But he has a track record.. Worth a shot, and I do sense that there's more to come.
JD-TWINS Verified Member Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Red Sox - 2.5 games up White Sox - 3.0 games up Caught Guardians Have tie breaker with Astros - Red Sox - are 2-1 v .Yankees & 6-4 v. Guards. Also, Gray? Ugh. Matthews is a good kid - can show flashes of brilliance. He got 10 strikeouts last night against a pretty meek hitting ball club. He got a few takes and swings & misses on middle-middle pitches …… I realize all pitchers make mistakes and give up hits/runs but watching him throw the ball all over the place with mediocre sharpness on 3-4 of his 6 pitch offerings, it’s unnerving. IMO, he trims to 3-4 pitches and he’s the next Varland story in the PEN …… probably not until next year though.

He just isn't getting it done and we can't keep running him out there hoping he will. He has 45 PA this year, and in SSS the BB/K is much better than last year. Good players have stretches this long where they are negative players. Shaitan, Church of Kreidler, Mike Sixel and 1 other 4
twinfan Verified Member Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Glad to see the Twins are making me look bad after I said the season is over for them prior to the 9th inning Thursday. They are a fighting bunch. I still look forward to next year when we all get healthy. However, they are keeping this year interesting. Church of Kreidler and Mike Sixel 1 1

He is almost 27, just because we traded for him shouldn't guarantee him playing time.

Connor Gould Verified Member Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Roden has good K/BB and discipline stats and a good hard-hit rate, but his expected stats are low. Maybe he needs to get it in the air better. If so, the approach will play. Also of note, Brooks Lee pulled another homer, I wonder if he's taking the Dozier career trajectory. Both were called up to be slap hitting shortstops, before becoming dead pull guys at other infield spots. Dozier went from 67 OPS+ rookie to 18 homer and 98 OPS+ year 2 before being a plus power bat from then on. Lee has gone from 64 OPS+ rookie to 16 homers and 81 OPS+ year 2 and is now sitting on 16 homers and a 101 OPS+. So not as good of a version, but maybe a similar career arc.

He doesn’t come across as all about money, but I don’t know him in depth. He is a competitor, been an underdog but will bet on himself. Twins competitive window, championship window is a couple years out I think he wants that opportunity to be chasing titles. Do the twins give him that long term opportunity?

Do the twins give him that long term opportunity? Lackey makes Jeffers look like a short timer in MN. Even if they give him the QO and he stays he shouldn't be here more than a couple years. But really a 29 year old who is at the top of his game needs to have one serious payday, and at a high-injury, short career position like catcher his chance is now. No problem with that, but this org has too much young catching coming up to tie up resources like this. Best of luck, thanks for the memories, love the QO compensation pick, stay in touch.
