Just curious:  Can anyone here name a player  prior to Jhonny Peralta who had his name spelled (misspelled) like that? I know some of you might say it’s a longtime Hispanic tradition. But it isn’t.  Back in the day, Spanish for Johnny would have been.Juanito not this misspelled form of Johnny.
I should have asked this before Pereda left.  I’m feeling like a Jhonny Come Lately.

Phonetically the 'H' doesn't make any sense no matter where you put it. One of those quirky spellings that's left over from bastardizing Latin I presume.

As to your specific question, Wikipedia lists many Jhonny athletes, dating back decades. Mostly football (soccer) players.

BBRef lists  11 players in major league history whose first name starts with “Jh”. Jhoan Dúran, Jharel Cotton, Jhon Romero and Pereda all played for the Twins and Jhoulys Chacín spent most of a year at Triple A in the Twins’ system. All of the players are Hispanic and principally have played in the last decade.

I thought it was a recent phenomenon.  Thanks for letting me I wasn’t completely losing it.

Oh no.  I am losing it.  I don’t remember of those older Jhonny players.

I was hoping an actual Spanish speaker would explain, but absent that, I believe that because the letter 'J' is ordinarily aspirated* ('Juan') similar to an English 'H', then if someone wishes to name their child with the sound we are familiar with (sounding roughly like 'Dj' in some renderings), they include the 'h' after the 'J'.

This is difficult to get across in writing and would be simpler face-to-face.  But as an example, if you recall hearing our recently traded closer Jhoan Duran's name mentioned in broadcasts, it wasn't "Yo-hann" or similarly, it was more like "Joe-hann".  That's what the 'h' does.

Pereda's parents must have wanted his name pronounced about like Johnny is in English, so they included the 'h' so that people wouldn't guess and say "Yonny" or "Honny" or similar.

I'm not 100% certain and if someone who knows wants to correct this explanation, I'd love to know.

* I checked my understanding using ChatGPT and it tells me to say "voiceless velar fricative."  I'm sure that will aid in everyone's understanding 😁

Yeah... that is certainly a major factor in my concern.

Concern over Pereda by himself isn't worth losing sleep over. The allocation spent on the Catcher position might be worth losing sleep over. Pereda as our #3 stashed in St. Paul isn't a bad place to be.

Eeles may be worthless, he may be worth something. However, he is minor league depth that doesn't require a roster spot at a position that currently has Gray, Kreidler and Arcia fighting for a 26 man spot.

Jeffers catching over 100 games puts Caratini at 1B and DH nearly an equal amount as catcher or we are paying 7 million for a 62 game or less at catcher. We have also invested 7 million in Bell. Bell will have to yield playing time in order for Caratini to get non-catcher AB's.

Offensively... Caratini is not statistically better than Larnach.

If Jeffers isn't traded... We are using a catcher to improve our offense at key offensive positions at the expense of Bell and possibly Larnach. Where have we gained by spending a total of 15 million on the catcher position.

Pereda could have helped manage these expenses.

Caratini MAY not be better than Larnach.  He's certainly what we've always thought Larnach SHOULD be.  Sadly, neither is Larnach.  Caratini is, however, more versatile being a switch hitter and playing more premium defensive positions.

Offensively?. I'll take Larnach without much debate.

Versatility? Yeah... I'll take Caratini.

But... lets make sure that we are on the same page. His versatility is at 1B and DH. His bat isn't 1B or DH. His 2 year 7 million value comes from his ability to catch.

Thanks.  I’m relieved that Spanish-speakers haven’t joined English-speakers in saddling their children with intentionally misspelled names (and a lifetime of having to spell it for people).  There is hope for the world.
I will try to find something else to occupy my thoughts before pitchers and catchers report (countdown begins soon).  So, I’ll move on to contemplating which name is worse for a baseball player - a pitcher named Balfour or a batter named Outman?

Larnach had a WAR of .1 in 500 ABs and an OPS of .727

Caratini had a WAR of .9 in 344 ABs and an OPS of .728

You don't have to debate and I'm fine with that.  At those numbers I'll take Caratini with or without debate.  His bat is just as good as Larnach.   Their career production per plate appearance is almost identical.  Given that I'll take the guy who spends 80% of this time at a premium (and more demanding) defensive position.

I don't care about any of the maybes. I want to know the plans for Jeffers.

The plan for Jeffers has been stated many times.  First by Falvey, then Shelton and Jeffers himself.  I doubt it has changed after Falvey left.  The plan is to have Jeffers catch 100+ games this year.

Jeffers stated in this link that Shelton and the FO gave him a heads up on the Caratini signing and assured him his role isn’t changing.

Jeremy Zoll was on Inside Twins today and essentially said the same thing. Caratini will be a backup catcher and get some time at 1B and DH.

For a team that does not sign FA and a catcher on his last non-FA year I am still curious about their plans (I assume they have some.  Extension?  Should have been done already.

Jeffers is a Boras client, so the chance for an extension at this point is very low.  Boras generally encourages his clients to reach free agency to maximize their value.  Personally, I don't think an extension was ever in the cards for Jeffers.  That doesn't preclude the Twins from signing him as a free agent, but again the odds will be low of resigning Jeffers.

For this year, it's really all speculation as to what they will do if they are or aren't in contention.  If they aren't, we all assume they will trade Jeffers at the deadline.  If they are, naturally we would assume they keep Jeffers and let him walk.  That's a gamble...If we hold on to Jeffers and don't make the playoffs (odds are low), we let him walk for nothing.  I don't see the Twins extending a qualifying offer to Jeffers.  This year the number was $22M.

I agree with all you write, but my concern is for the fact that the last two years played out without any discernable plan for 2027 -
