Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 According to Jim Duquette, Terry Ryan has said that it is safe to say that the Twins are in Trade mode. He also mentioned in the interview that he has taken many calls on Glen Perkins, though he is unlikely to deal the Twins closer.
howieramone1406390264 Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 So Perkins is on the market as many of us knew he was, and Ryan is down to his last 18 days to see if he can make a killing.
old nurse Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Any player is going to be marketed that is tradeable if the price is right. The chance of Perkins being dealt is low. If Ryan thinks the team comes out way ahead in a trade he would trade anyone.

My guys say that Smyly and How do you say his name... Castanellos or something like that. That's where the conversation starts. Dave: That's pretty steep... Why don't you mull over Harold Castro and I'll get back to you. Secretary: Kevin Towers Line 2 TR: Hey Kevin Towers: I'm interested in Glen Perkins... Skaggs and Bradley are not available. We won't trade them. TR: OK... Thanks for calling. Secretary: Ned Colletti Line 3 TR: Hey Ned Ned: I'm interested in Glen Perkins TR: The Tigers and D-Backs just called about him. Call me back and give me a chance to beat it TR: I gotta say Ned... The D-Backs are coming after him hard. I was talking about some good ball players with Kevin. Line 4 is blinking... It's O' Dowd. Kwak Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I guess the off-season plan to make the Twins competitive didn't work. Doggonit! Another unlucky roll-of-the-dice. Twins just can't catch (a break), hit (a card), or pitch ( a ringer). Well, maybe next year...
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Well, at least they are listening.
Oldgoat_MN Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Riverbrian has the inside scoop. At least the Twins are answering the phone. This should be interesting....

The Twins goal is not to have a long rebuild. I'd guess they are okay with where they are at. Except this isn't what they have said. Ryan was interviewed last week expressing disappointment. The stated goal was "meaningful" games in Sept. This isn't about what posters elieve or not, Ryan's standards coming into the year are easy to find and clearly haven't been met. They are likely okay, probably thrilled, with their prospects, but they did not achieve their publicly stated goals. Which is fine IMO,those goals were never attainable.

Finding his stated goals is easy, knowing his actual thoughts on the matter is entirely different. I'm of the opinion that the Twins primary goal is to make as much money as possible over the long term. Any other goal runs a distant 2nd unless it helps to maximize the profit.
greengoblinrulz Provisional Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Ryan is combing the minors for the next Eduardo Escobar & Pedro Hernandez. How the times have changed.

To me it's far more damning to hold them to their own expectations. That said, glad they are stating the right frame of mind: sell. That is exactly the right mode to be in.

jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 When will he say "we're in rebuilding mode"? How can they be in rebuilding mode with one of their oldest rosters in the last 15 years? Only 2010 was slightly older.

Or I guess you could suppose they are not disappointed with a third straight losing season. But that just doesn't sound like Ryan to me - I doubt he is happy with losing.

Come on, the Twins are not infalible. You agree with everything the Twins do except if they acknowledge they made a mistake.
beckmt Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 This is a rebuild year, they were just hoping to be around .500. That will not happen, but Twins need to keep stocking the farm system. It will come around in time. Major league level needs to be used for finding out who will help for more than the next 2 years. After that we had better be competitive.
Red Holstein Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I know its the red elephant in the room that noone wants to talk about, but what about Mauer? Will Ryan take offers on him? I think he wants to win, and the Twins are still a few years off. Does Mauer want to waste the rest of his prime here on a bad team or in Boston on a contender? Will he ASK for a trade? Has he had enough?
stringer bell Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I am sure the Twins want to make a profit. However, it makes sense to have a good team because then they will make a bigger profit. The teams that they will put together in the next 2-4 years should have relatively low payrolls, but still be competitive if they have enough pitching. Also, it is semantics as far as whether they are rebuilding or not. They are looking to sell all available veterans and bring in prospects and young players. To me that is rebuilding.

It would be an indictment if it was true.

The only way I could see it happening is, as you say, he asks for a trade and I don't see that happening. He's a Minnesota boy with a Minnesota wife who are starting a family. I would guess stability would be pretty important right now.
Roaddog Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I think for the Twins to trade Mauer it would take several top prospects , maybe more. I just dont see anyone doing that and taking on that salary. I think Fien, Doumit, and Morneau are more likely to move.

The Twins goal is not to have a long rebuild. I'd guess they are okay with where they are at. Many posters have responded to this tome before I could respond. I echo pretty much what they said. However, I suggest two things: 1) respond to humor with humor; and 2) get the latest script. The Twins FO were public with their disappointment of this season's record to date and enough so that they are willing to make trades to improve the team. As for the "no long rebuild" part I request a definition of "long". Whatever veterans that have been added were signed to short contracts which makes it appear as if they are "placeholders". Which is fine by me to an extent, but there is clear need for experienced talent as well as rookie talent. Also, the (assumed by me) new core of the team are/were teenagers when acquired so it is reasonable to conclude that a few years is needed for these guys to "get to full-speed"--which (again) is fine by me. Fast turnaround is what the Red Sox have accomplished (IMO), the Twins' plan is clearly oriented to take longer than the Red Sox's plan (still fine by me). I do think that they need to "speed it up" by adding some "high-quality" veteran talent. I really don't think that they can go from losing 90+ for years to winning 90+ in one season.

I guess even the biggest Terry Ryan appologist can't say anything nice about what he has accomplised this year. As I have stated before, Terry Ryan is the right man for the rebuild job. I'm not so certain he will be the right guy when the Twins are next competitive, but that's me. That said, I can plenty of nice things about him, and there's a possibility for more nice things once the trade deadline passes. Liriano for Escobar/HernandezSpan for Meyer.Revere for May, Worley.Thorpe and Minier.Kohl Stewart, Gonsalves, and Eades in combination with what appears to have been a very nice 2012 draft class. Ryan is doing a good job adding talent to the minors. He's not rushing our prospects. 2013 is going to be a rough year and 2014 is when I think we will start to see from fruit from all of this. I'm not sure he's the right guy when it comes to going hard after that free agent missing piece, but in regards to doing a successful rebuild, he is definitely the guy you want manning the helm.

The Rays (07-08), Orioles (11-12), Braves (90-91), Phillies (92-93), Mets (83-84), Tigers (05-06), White Sox (89-90) and probably more. I stopped after looking at half the teams and I only looked over the last 30 years.
