Ryan: Safe to Say We are in Trade mode

Many teams have gone from 90+ losses to 90+ wins in back to back years. The Rays (07-08), Orioles (11-12), Braves (90-91), Phillies (92-93), Mets (83-84), Tigers (05-06), White Sox (89-90) and probably more. I stopped after looking at half the teams and I only looked over the last 30 years.

Other teams, not this team.

It's close, but the 1990 Twins lost 88 games... 1991 Twins won 95 games.

If you look at those teams they typically have one thing in common. Most of them had a couple of young players that were becoming stars. Verlander, Glavine, Davis, Longoria. They also had several other young players (and a few veterans) in place during the 90 loss season.

 

if the 2014 Twins lose 90 games then it's possible to go from 90 losses to 90 wins. Next year the Twins just don't have the players in place (especially pitching) to make that big of a turnaround this year (imo). In 2015 that could be possible since potential stars (buxton and Sano) should be up full time and several other young players should be up and established as well.

Agreed, the Twins won't do that this year. I don't even think it's 2015 but perhaps 2016!

Anyway, I don't really care how great the return is, but I would try to trade off Duensing, Fien, and Burton hoping for an adequate return (really if one minor leaguer out of the three ends up being a productive big leaguer, that would make it fine by me--I would try for hard-throwing A-ball pitchers). There are replacements available in the system and middle relievers are easy to find anyway.

I agree. The reason why the Twins aren't ready to jump to 90 wins because they don't have close to enough pitching. Even if all of their top position prospects pan out, the Twins need to add good pitchers in the rotation and replace the probable losses of bullpen arms.

The Twins lack steel in the backbone, fire in the heart, and just plain grit in the face of difficulty--that's the big reason the won't make a miracle turnaround. They need to grow their way into success--and also deal with it!--as opposed to what the Pirates did last year.

It remains to be seen whether there are replacements available in the system, and unless you mean "warm bodies" I strongly disagree that middle relievers are easy to find.

The Twins are not going to get three guys for a single one of those guys. The comps aren't there.

 

Last year, the return for Delabar was Eric Thames. The return for Mujica was Zack Cox. Cox has since been designated for assignment by the Marlins. He cleared waivers. Thames is in AAA trying to make it back as a 4th OF.

 

Would that kind of return be adequate or would the Twins be better off keeping these guys?
