Today is the 59th anniversary of my favorite statistical anomaly in MLB history. I've mentioned it before, but I think a recall is appropriate.

The box score is attached, featuring the season's eventual Cy Young and World Series winner on the mound in Dodger Stadium in a loss to the Cardinals. While mostly dominant, this pitcher yielded a single, a home run and an intentional walk to an unlikely batter. Enjoy.

That same unlikely hitter had one other dinger that entire season and it was hit off a future HOF player too.  He had 14 career HR, 3 of which came off HOF pitchers.

Question for those smarter than me (read:  everybody):

Okert is starting because he's a lefty and they want him to face Schwarbs and Harper at the top of the lineup.  Then they want Festa to be the 'bulk' guy.  But what if Okert faces 5 batters in the first and gets out unscathed.  What would be the point of bringing in Festa at this point if there's a good chance he's gonna face one of those guys you didn't want him to in the first inning?  This has the potential for a massive trainwreck of a pitching day because we're trying to get cute with the matchups.

He's going to have to face them at least once. Besides that, the Phillies line-up is pretty lethal top to bottom and alternate handedness all the way through the line-up. At least there's no Realmuto, at least to start the game.

So then why not just start Festa?

Lee at SS and Castro at 3B. I like that 😁

I'm pleasantly surprised that Rocco realized Lee is the better option at shortstop until Correa returns.   Now watch... Brooks will blow a couple of plays today.   But I hope not.

His Uber was late??

You'll have to ask Rocco that question. But you know he's coming in to start a clean inning, not in the middle of someone's mess.

This is the best lineup we are able to field with the ingredients we have on hand.

Ain't lovin our chances...but that's why they play the game.

We said we'd be happy to take one from the Phillies but now I want more.

Castro has struggled at short and maybe been overextended? I didn’t think Willi would get many more innings at third, but with both Miranda and Lewis on the shelf, I think it’s the right call.
