Dumping players into a pennant chase is bad for the sport, and the specific reason there are trade deadlines.

Here are what I see as positives for baseball  1)  AL Central race is now more competitive —although bad for the Twins —potentially good for baseball 2)  Some good players will be playing in October instead of watching

The bad  1) Angels improve their future situation by tanking  and save $$$ in the process.  2)  The worst team benefits the most as they have first choice in waiver claims

The players who cleared waivers can still be released and as such would be free agents.  The signing team would pay the prorated league minimum with the Angels (or releasing team) paying the remainder.  I don’t see outright releasing as a preferred alternative to waiver claims as I think the released players would gravitate to the best teams (as players would choose the path that gave the best opportunity for a ring).  In this scenario, the best teams would get better at the expense of the out of contention teams

Cleveland must be getting a good chuckle.  They taught Falvey everything he knows, but they didn't teach him everything, they know.  If they overcome Minn and win the Central, they will will really have schooled him.

I'm not sure trailing by 5 games in the division on September 1st is really making the Cleveland folks chuckle all that much.  If they overcome the deficit, sure laugh away.

Nothing wrong with the waiver process. The Angels made a move that was an aberration. The gnashing of teeth will only harm your sleep. The Twins have more than enough talent to win their division. Play ball or go home is September baseball. Does anyone remember the Phillies falling apart down the stretch or the heartbreaking final weekend in Boston in 1967?

With a 5% chance to win the division? This is just as much as them spiting the Twins as it is them thinking they have a chance of winning the division. They sold at the trade deadline for a reason.

You know they could easily the win division right? Like they did last year? Twins have some tough matchups too coming up.

1. When do you start this new methodology? The season starts in April. Waiver claims happen all year long. If a team goes to the back of the line. Teams won't claim Luplow. Do you reset the waiver order in August? I think you have a good idea but there is still some complication.

2. Unprecedented.

1.  Set noon Monday EST as the start over time.

If only there was a guy in AAA ready to be better than Luplow right now (or two of them).

Sucks big time that Cleveland is MUCH better today than they were yesterday. Yikes.

How about Buxton?

One fun consequence for the Angels is they lost 5 players the day before rosters expanded which means they need to fill seven spots on the 28 man roster for tonight's game.

Shouldn't be an issue, their system is loaded, right? Yikes, that team will be awful for years.

The Angels needed to trade Ohtani at the deadline to have any hope in the near future. They desperately need a rebuild and their best veteran trade asset according to MLB trade values is Jose Quijada. Their roster looks like an expansion team - old vets past their prime and young players brought up too soon out of desperation.

Not everyone loves analytics, but these numbers aren’t pulled out of a hat “old timer”.

The Playoff Odds are based on our Depth Charts, which is a 50/50 Steamer and ZiPS blend scaled to individual playing time estimates programmed and updated by the FanGraphs staff.  We then simulate the season 10,000 times (using the actual remaining schedule) using a method adapted from the folks at CoolStandings.

If you don’t like our projections, you can also switch to “Season to Date” mode which runs the same simulations based on the current year statistics of the players in question rather than the projections. You can also view the results based on simulations which assume every game is a coin flip.

Heh.

I rest my case, "whippersnapper."

It is what it is.  We move on with what we have.  The FO will have to live with, and be judged by, the results at the end of the season.

The multiple articles from this writer about the trade deadline are so old.  Wish he had a proposal we should have made AND the other team would have accepted.  The trade market was bare, or expensive.  My god it's sept, we're up 5 and players coming back.  Try to get over your odd opinion of the deadline (article writer), which may or may not be correct.  Try to enjoy the 1st place ride

What  a header :  certainly know how to bring out the negative vibes.   I wasn't sure any of the players would make it to the Twins and this clearly underscored that.  I am slightly surprised Cleveland was aggressive, I thought they would be throwing in the towel, but apparently not.  I can't see this as negative on anything the Twins could have done in this situation.

NN is normally so good but wish he had the ability to realize he has missed on trade deadline and waiver wire.  180 degrees off.  But he's all in.  Sometimes article writers need to understand they missed.  I haven't seen that admission yet
