Twins_Fan_in_NJ Verified Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 When the Twins traded for Lopez last year - what was the mood like in here? At least from what I saw from some of the talking heads, i.e., ESPN and MLBN, the trade had pretty positive reviews. This front office has botched trades. To be absolutely sure. But, at the time, I don't think this trade fell into that category. Hindsight is always 20/20. As for this trade, meh. One problem dealt for another. Maybe Maki can get something out of Florio. If not, oh well. Twins weren't getting anything out of Lopez either and no team would trade for him if the return back to the Twins was more than a Florio type player. Bob Twins Fan Since 61 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 Besides Lopez's poor performance, my guess is he was a problem in the clubhouse too. Addition by subtraction. Hindsight is 20/20 but man would love to have Cano back. They do need to do through review on why Baltimore was able to turn Cano into an All Star and they over-valued Lopez's trade value based on 1/2 a season has a closer. jun, Mike Sixel and Twins_Fan_in_NJ 2 1
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted July 27, 2023 Author Posted July 27, 2023 Cano has given Baltimore a lot more than we got from Lopez, but I'm not sure I'd love to have Cano back now. He is slowly regressing to his mean that we once saw. Just blew a save last night; 4.05 ERA in the last 7 games, 3.77 in the last 15. Strikeouts per nine falling, now down to 7.84. He is looking more and more like a half season wonder who is regressing back to a solid middle reliver/iffy late inning type guy. Still better than Jorge Lopez gave us, that's for sure, but Cano isn't looking like a long term all star type. nicksaviking 1
Twins_Fan_in_NJ Verified Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 Right before he went on the IL, Lopez imploded in a game. His body language and facial expressions were very strange. Then he caught a pop-up right off the pitcher's mound and went running into the dug-out and tunnel with a huge smile on his face. Not sure what the deal is with him and I hope whatever it is, he can work through and get his career back on track. But at this point, something's certainly off and it might be taxing for the entire team. It was best to move on. Twins were lucky to even get someone like Floro.

This FO keeps finding ways to making the future less and less bright. The Twins current brand of baseball bores me.... all you to do to announce a Twins game is perfect...."a swing and a miss"...half your job is done. gunnarthor and Mike Sixel 1 1

Lartwinfan Verified Member Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 I mean a roll of the dice, so let’s roll twins winning the division would guarantee a home playoff game!! Target field would be rocking (and Rolling) See y’all there

Yeah, the Orioles clearly won that trade, and Cano is helping them this year, but he never looked like someone who was going to have sustained MLB success. I don't see this being a trade we rue for long. The only caveat to that would be, why are his walks so significantly reduced? If that's permanently fixed, maybe he'll be a guy who bounces around for years. But if there was a fix, it appears to have crippled his strikeout numbers, and as a reliever, that's certainly going to come back to bite him later.

Lopez' recent "absence" is believed to have something to do with the health of his child. This move allows him to be closer to said child. But, sure, assume the worst. Mike Sixel 1

I'll willing to bet Cano's play going forward will be more dependent on the walks - reminds me of Brusdar Graterol, who's got consistently low K rate but rarely ever walks anyone and has a pretty darn good ERA & FIP.

I made this observation earlier in the thread. the O's really shouldn't trust Cano anymore as their setup man. He has been hit hard just about every time out over the past month. Hitters have figured him out. If O's want to win the AL East, they need to find someone better.
