Sure seem to be a lot of commenters with a burr under their saddles this morning.  Guess that includes Hunter.

My biggest concern from reading this are the comments about kirilloff's wrist.  Have been gone for a week, however, the last I read in the Strib was that he was swinging without any pain.  All was good.  Has that changed?

As for Gallo, don't know a lot about him.  Hate hitters who strike out a lot like Sano, but on the other hand a K is a hell of a lot better than a weak grounder into an inning ending double play.  Expect he doesn't do a lot of that.  On the other hand, wouldn't most of us be thrilled to walk into the office this morning and have our boss call us in and tell us if we make a one year commitment he will up our pay to $12M, or $11M whatever he is making.  This game really doesn't make a lot of sense any more.

As a Joey Gallo supporter, I must defend him at all costs;)

As far as Kirilloff's wrist, it's a giant unknown. He has admitted he is still worried about it, which means we're all worried about it. Who knows if it will ever be great, which is a shame. Hopefully 6 months from now we're talking about how incredible he has been, but he must stay healthy.

Have there been reports that the wrist is still a problem?  Or are you and others merely speculating it still is a problem?

It sounds like batting Gallo in the 9 hole at the bottom of the batting order would be a fair compromise since he has a so many detractors. It's probably better for him to gradually work his way up the batting order then to rapidly slide all of the way down it.  I think that's where Rocco should put him. Then if he walks he can be on base for the lead off hitter.

Wow! That was my reaction when Gallo was signed. I had no hard feelings relative to our desire or ability to sign Correa……..I did think it limited our ability to sign a Starter or Reliever from FA market. I do believe hat not spending on a reliever at this point is due to budget & the fact that we are paying both Kepler & Gallo. Your point of some base of around 5 million with over half, 6 million, in some incentive goal structure……..makes way better sense!

Going into Spring Training with our potential mix of guys in OF & their health histories, Buxton - Larnach - Kepler - Kirilof ………it now seems to make a lot of sense for REAL depth to have both Kepler & Gallo around as well as Gordon.

If they trade Max or Joey at some point in July due to successes of others that’s fine. I can’t watch the AAA subs we were starting daily last year because our front line guys were hurt. Hopefully, Gallo will perform at a level that is distinguishably better than Jake Cave & Gilberto Celestino. Both with advanced metrics & the eye test!

I hope he does well... I really do... but

He has more strikeouts that hits, runs, and RBI .... combined. Career .199 hitter... YUCK!!

Quote from a Twinsfest article (Dan Hayes-the athletic):

Quote

“(Soreness is) definitely there,” Kirilloff said. “They cut my bone so there’s definitely some aches and stuff to go along with that, but from a pain standpoint it feels good. … I think they’re expected to go away. I think anytime you break your bone it can take a lot longer than expected to heal. From my understanding, it gets to that certain point where it’s healed enough to do whatever you need to do and then it keeps healing for a while after that.”

I can understand and even empathize with that.  But... I would counter that despite that, and even because of that, you should root for him.  He's on our favorite team and I've never heard anything that would say he's not a decent human being.

If he does well, it only helps the team do better overall.  I understand why many Twins fans are super hesitant (if not outright hostile to the signing), but it doesn't hurt to hope (and pray ;)) that he succeeds here.  Baseball is hard, we don't need to make it harder :).

If I thought my hopes would help him I would write him a letter to encourage him, but he does not and will not know me and like most fans I will be anonymous no matter what he does.

Grumpy Cat says your argument is invalid.

He said it... I'm just the messenger.  He threatened to cut me if I didn't pass it along.

Yeah, when that guy told me to look at an invalid stat like OPS, that was an invalid argument from him. It was pretty awesome when I mentioned using wOBA and wRC+ instead of the invalid OPS.

Don't continue to be someone else's errand runner, you are no good at it.

I think it’s a decent flyer to take-even at this price. Best case: Gallo=Prospects.

Well, I think best case is we get 2019 or 2021 Gallo, which is an all-star player, but I hear what your saying. Very low risk flyer!

He recently started swinging again and said that he still feels soreness, however it is significantly decreased from before. It sounds unencouraging, but with the surgery he had, I don't think we have enough information to determine whether or not it's going to hamper him in two months. It could be general soreness caused by the surgery. According to the article that made the statement, this is a good sign, but the way it was worded just seemed a little scary to most Twins fans who read it (myself included).

Wow,  I can't believe all the controversy over one player!  Personally, I will be rooting for Gallo the hit .230,  walk 33% of the time, hit 35 to 40 HR and have an OPS of 900+.  Then watch all the Gallo Jerseys fly off the shelves. By the way, why can't I find one yet?  LOL, I think we should chill out a little bit, let the FO do their job, and hope for the best.  See you at the ballpark. (with my Gallo jersey on)

Hey man, you commented on my article. I also responded to your post with the wOBA and wRC+ stats as well. Also, OPS is a valid stat that is often looked at to determine a player's overall effectiveness at the place. Go be a Negative Nelly somewhere else. Good vibes only my brother.

Wil Myers and Adam Duvall are the 2 names that come to mind with a similar type profile as righties. Myers certainly not the same defender as Gallo, and doesn't play CF ever, while Duvall doesn't play 1B. Duvall 4 years older, Myers 3 years older. Myers a little better BA and not as much power, but still tons of Ks and BBs. Duvall a little better BA and good power, but no BBs and medium Ks. I think they'd be the best comps Gallo as righties as FAs this offseason. Myers signed for 7.5M in Cinci, Duvall for 7M in Boston.

Thanks -- those are helpful comparisons. If I use the "housing appraisal" model, where you add or subtract a little based on the number of bathrooms, bedrooms, square footage, etc., it seems like the contract size for Gallo is about right. Certainly not way out of line.

The question is whether the Twins are the right team to give him that contract. For guys in that price range, there's always going to be some positives and a flaw or two. Where I'm coming out is that he checks quite a few boxes, but isn't perfect, with the primary flaw being his handedness. There's also his strikeout level, but his walks and slugging ability are apparently good enough to have him with decent stats over the course of his career. He profiles as a slightly above-average hitter, just not a well-rounded one.

If Gallo is the biggest acquisition of the offseason, we've got a problem. But with the Correa signing and Lopez trade, I'm cool with signing Gallo as a second-level move, like I see the Farmer trade and Vazquez signings. I continue to feel that depth and roster flexibility are a couple of their biggest strengths, and I think he adds to that.

Aaaaand the childish retorts emerge.  Feel better now??  If not, I personally don't mind if you want to try again. Perhaps you just need a hug??

Seriously... you seem like a cool (albeit sometimes grumpy) dude.  I got your back amigo.

It is a funny thing - I think you are right, I get grumpy over Baseball - it is a game I love and I see it moving from its status as the national game to third place behind NFL and NBA and possibly dropping below Soccer.  NHL soon to follow.  Certainly behind the charade called wrestling.  That is disturbing.  The amazing thing is that outside of baseball grumpiness is the furthest from my attributes.  Good call.

I think too that if you sign the letter "Mikelink45" you'll have more credibility with Joey. None of this silly first name-last name signing convention that suggests that those of us on the internet have a real life. Being Midwesterners, I always like to add a few observations about the weather as well. 😄

You're the guy who swooped in at the end after everything was already squashed with the childish invalid comment. Don't be mocking and telling me that my argument was invalid when the guy was trying to mansplain stats to me and talks about OPS.

"The problem with OPS is that one point of OBP and one point of SLG are not equal. OBP is about twice as valuable as SLG, meaning that OPS overrates power hitters and underrates high-OBP guys. It's a rather mild issue overall, but we have a better statistic, wOBA, which does not do that." https://library.fangraphs.com/offense/ops/#:~:text=The problem with OPS is,which does not do that.

You were the one acting like a child and then you get your feelings hurt when I respond. Don't call someone out if you don't want a strong response.

You tell me to leave? Who's being negative now? I can respond to that ex_pat character if I want to. He attacked me, tell him to leave. I do not have to leave and wasn't being negative.

I don't like THAT weather, that's for sure!

What part of the country are you in? I heard on the news tonight that they reached -110 wind chill on Mt. Washington this evening.

My brother, it’s not that serious. Just relax my friend. I didn’t mean to upset you, but also, you must understand that when you comment on my post insinuating that I’m wrong and my thought process is stupid, I’m going to respond and start conversation. I’m not attacking you personally, and you’re entitled to your opinion. Much love my friend.
