Contreras and Celestino (and Cave) can be freely optioned to AAA, while JBJ cannot. So yes, you could DFA Contreras and sign JBJ. But then when Kepler returns in a few days, you'd have no choice but to option Celestino or Cave, even though Cave is off to a good start and Celestino has performed better (at the plate and overall) than JBJ over 2021-2022. I'm open to DFA'ing Contreras to upgrade the roster, of course, but I don't see the point in doing it right now for JBJ.
Doctor Gast Verified Member Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 When we deperately needed a Buxton sub, I advocated strong for Bradley. Now we have Celestino & Gordon with Buck & Bradley is tanking, besides Kepler will be back before Bradley becomes a free a free agent and Larnach isn't too far behind (hopefully). Celestino & Gordon have done an admiralable job in Buxton's absence and deserve their spot. Besides there are more teams that have a much worse CF than we do, that'll take him before we get a shot. So I say no way.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 FWIW, Kepler may be activated as soon as tomorrow (Saturday):

I expect Kepler back before that. But I'd roll the dice with Bradley over Contreras or Celestino right now. 1 minute ago, Doctor Gast said: besides Kepler will be back before Bradley becomes a free a free agent Boston released JBJ, rather than DFA him. In any case, Lamet can't be traded now, so the only way to get him would be to claim him while the 17 teams ahead of us in waiver priority pass. Judging by the numbers, Lamet also may be more of a longer-term project than a shorter-term boost -- how much do you want him to try working out his issues in a major league pennant race? Especially after SD and MIL both declined that opportunity. (Lamet just passed 5 years service time, so he can decline any minor league option now.)

He also was 3rd? in the NL Cy Young vote two seasons ago. There may be a little more upside to picking him up over Bradley Jr.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 I think the Rockies picked up the pitcher...
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 Rockies picked up Lamet. Not available to us.

The Twins way is to dumpster dive so JBJ is not out of the realm of possibility. Having JBJ, Cave, Celestino, and Contreras, all seemingly not worthy of a major league uniform, available to them would be money in the bank in their minds. I think it's funny how everyone can't wait for the return of Kepler who also can't hit. I guess when you raise your Batting average from .211 in 2021 to .244 in 2022 it makes you look like a superstar.

Looks like the Rockies are 9th in waiver priority, so the 8 worst teams in the league all passed on Lamet. His $4.78 million salary probably didn't help, and the Rockies could be on the hook for a similar figure next year unless they non-tender him (at which point, he'd be available to anyone with no guaranteed salary attached).

I think one could argue that swapping out Mark Helman for Contreras might upgrade the roster. Obviously not a bold move, but Helman looks solidly interesting.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 For me, the answer is no. Guy hasn't hit a lick for 2yrs. And the OF defense isn't really the issue, which is JBJ's one saving grace. I just don't see the reward. And as far as Cave bashing, the guys was solid for a couple years before injury and such. He's been playing good ball in St Paul all season, and yet, the Twins have turned to younger players previously. Why? They've also been doing well and have some upside. But when Jake Cave, doing well at AAA, is like your 7th or 8th OF, that's a luxury very few teams have. He's here to help, not to be part of the future. Just relax
