cmoss84 Verified Member Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 In the event that we do not sign Story or Correa (which is quite possible), it will be interesting to see what the FO does with the Donaldson savings. How would you use the money? My strategy: Keep the crazy-move momentum going. Let's play unorthodox baseball for a year or two until some of our prospects are up and we have other FA/trade options. TRADES: Rolls Royce, Trevor Larnach, Urshela($6.5), and Winder for Matt Chapman($9.5) and Manaea($10) or Montas($5). A's appear ready for a complete makeover. NET: +$10-$15 Gary Sanchez, Blayne Enlow, and Cole Sands for German Marquez. Gary gets to hit in COL...either as C or DH. German under control on a nice contract. Rockies get 2 decent SP prospects. NET: +$4 million this year, $15 and $16 next 2 years Hypothetically, Manaea, Marquez and Chapman in these trades would add around $20 million this year. SIGNINGS: C - Stephen Vogt 1/$1 (great club house guy and can still play a little bit) NET: +$1 OF/IB/DH - Schwarber OR Castellanos 3/$45 (this one is going to take a leap of faith and take on some criticism. I just think they are both solid bats for the next 3 years). NET: +$15 SP - Boyd 2/$14 NET: +$7 RP - Trevor Rosenthal 1/$3 RP - Andrew Miller 1/$2 RP - Delin Betances 1/$2 NET...all moves...+$45-$50 this year (not sure on total salary cap at this point). FO would have to work on extending Chapman and Manaea. Club option on year 2 of Boyd. Rotation GRAY-MARQUEZ-MANAEA-RYAN-BOYD-BUNDY-OBER Bullpen Rogers-Rosenthal-Duffey-Miller-Alcala-Theilbar-Betances (Trim down to 13 man pitching staff by options/release) Lineup 2B Arraez SS Polanco CF Buxton 3B Chapman LF Kirilloff DH/1B Schwarber/Castellanos DH/1B Sano RF Kepler C Jeffers/Vogt UTIL Gordon/Rooker
4twinsJA Verified Member Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 Like where you are going but still no SS addition, do Twins need to add 3 more SPs and 3 RPs.
cmoss84 Verified Member Posted March 15, 2022 Author Posted March 15, 2022 Thanks yo. This basically buys a year before Martin is ready. Figure having Chapman over there might help make up for Jorge's defense at short. Yes, I do think we need a WHOLE lot more pitching. This is a combo of short and long term...
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 Dunno, I'm pretty close to "Story or bust" after the Donaldson deal. They can sign or trade for anybody else but also, "Story or bust".
Twinsrtheworst Verified Member Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 Suggested something similar. I like it.

dex8425 Verified Member Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 I guess I'd rather have Boyd than Pineda. At least he'll stay healthy and won't get suspended. Rockies price for Marquez is super high, so I don't think he gets moved, at least not for the deal you have above. I'm expecting 2 major moves, and maybe 2 minor moves remaining.

I'll take the same tack I took prior to 2020--if Falvine are good enough with prospects to build a contending team at a sustainable level, they can afford a mega-contract for a player at a position it's hard to develop (Ace, All-star SS, etc). If they aren't good enough to do that (i.e. they will need to save payroll for other FAs to play a bigger part on the team), then they shouldn't be running the team anyways. I'm good with Story, I just kind of feel like if you're going to play in the FA market, you may as well go for it.

cmoss84 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Author Posted March 16, 2022 Welp. Chapman gone. Blue Jays are legit. Schwarber gone. But a bit more than I would have spent. Here's to getting Castellanos and an A's SP...

It is my son's birthday next week and he has outgrown his Buxton jersey, I said a new jersey would be a good present, he said "Yes, I will take a Vlad Jr jersey" , I asked why Vlad, and he said well we were at Niagara Falls when he won the home run derby, and a bunch of kids in his school have jumped on the Blue Jay bandwagon. (Not a good sign for the twins, that the teenagers are cheering for other teams. We will be in St. Petes next week and guess which team he wants to go see in spring training (FYI, it isn't the Twins, again I asked why and he said "besides Buxton and Sano, I don't know any of the players, I asked about Polanco, and he said oh yea forgot about him, still want to go see the Jays" My teenager and his friends can't be the only ones turning away from the Twins?

Bad for the Twins good for baseball? The Twins certainly lack for exciting players (beyond Buxton when he's healthy, and Polanco if you're into just really solid offense). Vlad had an all time great season last year. This is a great example of what the league needs. Get the stars into the young people's lives and promote them like crazy nationally. That Blue Jays team is fun. They're must see TV for me. Interesting look into some young fan's thoughts. Thanks for sharing that.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 How much would you overpay, longterm, for Story or Correa. Or, with games happening this weekend, will BOTH probably take a huge 1-2 year contract (with an opt out after this season) and return to the free agent market again next season. Would you pay either $30-35 for a year of play?

I would not pay that kind of money, I would use the Pohlads money though, not sure what 1 year does for the Twins, but I don't care about owners that are willing to spend 50 million less than last year

Would you pay either $30-35 for a year of play? I tend to doubt either of them will take a short deal. Correa theoretically could, on account of his age (only 27) -- but he's coming off a 7.2 WAR, 131 OPS+ season. Hard to imagine his bargaining position will improve next offseason. Story is already 29 and coming off a less dominant year -- 4.2 WAR is strong, but 103 OPS+ is not. It would be a big risk for him to turn down ~$120 mil right now. Of course, opt-outs in a longer deal are always an option too!

For Correa, I would go 1/40, 2/75 with a club opt out, 3/120, or 4/150. 4 years would be my max, unless he took 5/175 or something similar. Story...1/27, 2/50, 3/75, or 4/100.
cmoss84 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Author Posted March 16, 2022 I just don't think we get either one. Predictions: Correa gets 8/300 and Story gets 6/200.

If that happens, they might turn into the favorite team in the league.

This reply isn't meant for you, but everybody. What good does signing either one for 1 year do to help the Twins? Even two years seems silly, if you aren't going 3 years at least; signing either doesn't make any sense, other them to spend the owners money.
