GAME THREAD: Seattle Mariners @ Minnesota Twins, 11 Apr 2021, 1:10 PM CDT

Greetings all, and welcome!

For today's game thread intro I'm going to use the time-honoured (Canadian spelling to acknowledge Twins fans living in the Dominion) 5-topic introduction.

1.) Today is the 67th anniversary of 11 April 1954. On this date there were so few events of significance that it has been designated to be the least noteworthy and least interesting day in modern history. Feel free to do an internet search and you'll see that to be the case. Of course, there is significant irony in this. The fact that it has this designation makes it noteworthy and interesting.

2.) Today is also the birthday of one of this site's more noteworthy members. I'm not going to say who. However, I will say that once a woman gets to be age 59 it's impolite to mention her age so I won't do so.

3.) On the subject of birthdays, Ryan Jeffers and Brandon Waddell share the same birthday, June 3. It is not surprising that two players on a major league roster share the same birthday; in fact, it is expected. The probability of two people in a group of 26 sharing the same birthday is approximately 60%.

4.) I posted this link on the R.I.P. Hank Aaron thread back in January but I think it's worth posting again for those who missed it before. It's very cool, both for the math and the story of the people involved.

5.) e^iπ + 1 = 0.

You may have noticed that there is math in this post. That's because math was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

There are things that are unquestionably true and unquestionably significant. This equation, often referred to as Euler's identity, is probably the most true and most significant of all. It contains the five most fundamental numbers: 0, 1, e, i, and π. It also contains the four most fundamental operations: equality, addition, multiplication, and exponentiation. I think it is absolutely beautiful, and if I ever were to get a tattoo this is what it would be.

Expected weather conditions at gametime: 48F/feels like 44F, cloudy, winds NNW (from the left field corner toward right-center) at 10 mph, dew point 39F.

Let's hope that the numbers in today's game favour our favourite team!

Lineups and batting order are not available as of the time of this post. They will be posted later.

Let’s hope Shoemaker is really on his game today and that lineup produces so there isn’t another extra-inning game.

Go Twins!

Dunno who the birthday girl is, but Happy Birthday anyway, to what we apparently might call an Old Lady Twins Fan.

Oh and (obligatory) "it was my understanding there would be no math."

Disappointed to see Sano still in the line-up. Doctor K needs to take a seat. With Jeffers behind the plate this would have been a good time to put Garver on 1st. It's one of the reasons the Twins are carrying three catchers, isn't it?

Wow, calling someone old. That’s something coming from you. I mean, she would have to be the Creator if you’re calling her old.

Btw, how long before the game begins, in Earth time?

For the record, 59 is not old.

If the shoe fits ...

I don't think she'd equate herself to God, or even say she was God-like. She may, however, say she was god-like as she calls upon her ancestors Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Euterpe, Iris, Hebe, Elpis ... but for the purposes of game threads, she mostly calls upon Thalia and the Maniae.

Maybe you knew of them from your early days?

I dated a couple of 'em.

They'd prolly tell you they broke it off, but who can remember after all these years who broke up with who.

Sano is gonna homer today just because of this post.

Everybody reading this, please watch the fascinating math video in this post. It was fascinating.  Thanks Nine of twelve. I assume you are a math magician.

Far from it, but I find the subject very interesting. Of any field of human endeavor it is the closest thing to the truth.

Routine scoreless top of the first.

Prolly would have been more routine if not for Shoemaker getting squeezed. We need a more consistent and more accurate method of calling pitches than human beings.

Trouble with the internet, so I had to connect the computer to my phone's hot spot. That reminded me of a story from my son's workplace. He works for the city cemetery department, which includes digging graves and helping with funerals in addition to his primary mowing responsibilities.

Apparently the inventor of the USB port was local and passed away recently. They were having trouble getting the casket into the grave, but then they pulled it back up and rotated it 180 degrees.

Tough to find good help. I looked through craigslist and Facebook market place to find an odd jobs guy to do some things around the house for me. I gave him a list of 10 things to do, and at the end of the day, he had only done the first, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth things on the list.

I don't get it.
