Tigers sign Schoop and Cron

It was apparent for several months that Schoop would not be back with the Twins so I'm glad he found a job. Same for Cron, I guess, but I think the Twins should have tried to bring him back.

Huh, so they'll be playing together again as the likely 1B-2B combo for Detroit. Not a bad pair of signings for them, and Cron could especially be a good deal if his thumb recovers. That's a solid way to spend $12M.

I don't know why the Tigers are trying to "rebuild" with those two guys on one-year contracts, but I wish them well.

At least when they play the Indians, White Sox, and Royals.

Both are solid signings, but neither moves the needle much in creating a winning team.  It is unlikely either would block anyone, Caberra will now be a full time DH when healthy.  Detroit needed to move closer to 60 - 70 wins, but still needs a ton of pitching help.

It depends on where you are rebuilding from, I guess.  If you have a bunch of young guys and are biting the bullet while losing 100 games, I would think trying to add a couple of veterans on maybe two- or three-year deals to get stability would make sense (and those wouldn't be my guys).  I don't think the Twins last year were rebuilding at all the way the Tigers are now- they had a team they thought would be pretty good, and added two guys to fill gaps.

If the goal is to have these two guys around for a few months and flip them for younger players, why not just get younger players now?  I don't think either one is likely to be worth too much at the deadline to a playoff contender unless they absolutely catch fire.  Maybe they add stability, maybe they just take two spots away from seeing which younger guys can play.

This seems more like a pair of Logan Morrison signings to me.
