Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Are we buying smeltzer as this good? Or is it a matter of “the book isn’t out yet” on him?Yes
Bomba2026 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 My guy Smeltzer is pitching a great game, now in the 6th and someone is warming up.....really. I have to head off to work but if they take him out like usual I will not be happy! He deserves to be our 5th Starter. Can the Twins get some run support please!!
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Are we buying smeltzer as this good? Or is it a matter of “the book isn’t out yet” on him?Teams will catch up to him, doesn't mean he can't continue to be successful, I doubt to this degree but that's fine.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Bringing in a relief pitcher when your starter has < 80 pitches seems like a repeat fatal error if Smeltzer is, indeed, done.I think I would have someone warming (Duffey I imagine), let Smeltzer start the inning and pull him if he allows a baserunner. He’s pitched too well to deserve an ugly stat line if he all of a sudden loses it.
Mill1634 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Are we buying smeltzer as this good? Or is it a matter of “the book isn’t out yet” on him?I think both at this point. At the very least Smeltzer's floor is a left handed LOOGY. Problem is, there are quite a few of those guys. However, I do think he is better than just a loogy. I don't think he is probably as good as he's shown (it is the Royals, but it is still an MLB lineup.) I think I would be comfortable with him as the #5 next year if you go get another top tier starter and resign one of the the three upcoming FA's.

Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Let’s temper enthusiasm by remembering these are the Royals. And while it is true he’s pitched better than the other guys against them this weekend, it’s still the Royals. On getaway day.Don't forget he went 5 innings versus the Yankees and gave up a single run. Against the "savages of the MLB"!

VATwinsFan Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Pretty light game thread. I guess everyone must be out on the lake floating around without any cell service. Not that I would complain if it were me.
TwinsCD Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 "It'll take Joe West a while to get in from 2nd base." Nice subtle line, Richard.
Mill1634 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Fantastic start by Devin Smeltzer. Put the team in great position to win, and that is all we needed him to do. Shut this one down bullpen!
notoriousgod71 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 I still wouldn't take him out. He's pitching better than anyone coming out of that bullpen right now.

Mill1634 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 The use of Trevor May over the past week and a half has been CRAZY. One pitch in the past 8+ days. Hasn't pitched in blowouts. Hasn't pitched when the bullpen has been taxed. I know he was in a rough patch, but his stuff will play. Surprised he isn't being use here

That might be why May isn't pitching here.
