He's a career .230 hitter? Had some pop in the minors but hit like .230 down there too. Might as well go with Vargas?

What do we know about this Tyler Austin?

Hopefully Lynn can be a double agent at least.

Thoughout his milb career, Austin was always a good OBP and slugging potential with defensive questions and contact issues.  Oh yeah and he seemingly is hurt alot.  Here is what BA wrote up on him prior to the 2017 season:

Even before he was drafted, Austin had been through a lot. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in high school and had surgery to remove the tumor. Little more than a week after the surgery, he played in a high school showcase. The Yankees drafted Austin in the 13th round in 2010 and gave him a $130,000 bonus to forgo a Kennesaw State commitment. He rocketed through the lower levels of the system and earned a place on the 40-man roster in 2014, but injuries and struggles stalled his career and led to him being designated for assignment after the 2015 season. Finally healthy in 2016, Austin found success at Triple-A and made history in his major league debut when he and Aaron Judge became the first teammates to go back-to-back with home runs in their first big league at-bats. Austin showed all-fields power and patience in the minors, though he struck out at a 40-percent clip once he got to the majors. He is an average defender in right field and at first base, and could win a job in a utility role with the Yankees out of spring training.

Luis Rijo also included apparently. a 19 year old in A ball, but I don't know much of anything else about him.

So looks like we went for a high upside pitcher and hedged with a more projectable position player, once again.

Salary dump for a bench player.  Rijo is the interesting part of this deal.  19-years old and already has seen action in the FSL.  He also refuses to walk hitters.  May give up too many hits, but could be helpful down the road.

It’s a salary dump, in which the Twins ate salary, and they got an interesting 19yo. Ok, not sure that’s what salary dump means

From Wikipedia:

Brian Cashman, the Yankees' general manager, referred to Austin as a "mega prospect" in August 2012.[14][16] Austin won the Yankees' Minor League Player of the Year Award for the 2012 season.[16]

Austin with the Trenton Thunder in 2013
Prior to the 2013 season, Austin was ranked as the 77th best prospect in baseball by Baseball America.

He star has faded somewhat, but he was an exciting prospect once.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Twins and Yankees will split the remaining $4mil owed Lynn this season.  So I guess it's only about a $2mil salary dump, with a couple cheap bodies to boot.  Believe me, I'm not excited about this deal, but it's also hard to hate too.

At least Austin is a righty who can play 1B and the OF. Aug 1 I stick Morrison on revokable waivers. When no one bites I dangle him on the free agent market. When no one bites again I DFA him.

Austin has big K rates. 40% in MLB this year, 30% at AAA. Too bad he's not a pitcher. :)

He has similar K% and HR% as Miguel Sano. Too bad Sano's not a pitcher too? He already had Tommy John after all.

Austin hits right handed and is hopefully a better defensive RF than Grossman (which isn't a hard bar to clear). He was once considered a decent prospect, so maybe he can show something over the next couple months as a platoon guy at 1B/RF against lefties. The Twins also add another lottery ticket type guy in Rijo (they seem to be stocking up on 19 year olds). Probably fair to say it's a little better return than I expected for Lynn.

Hopefully the Twins can package some of these young guys for one or two guys that can actually help out next year?

I'm going contrary to popular opinion but I like Tyler Austin.

I've seen him play a couple of times, didn't know who he was but he woke me up with some bombs and I remember looking him up afterwards.

Hits the ball a loooooonnnnnggggg way and he plays with excitement and energy. He has 244 AB's over 3 seasons, that is hardly what I call a decent run and has managed to knock 15 home runs out.

At that pace if you give him 600 AB's that is upper 30's power. And with a few more AB's maybe he can lower that strikeout total and he starts looking a little different.

His injury history is a little concerning and no options kinda suggests that we are going to give him a run in 2019 but I think he might surprise us. I guess we will find out because he is here. Plays 1B and OF... suppose to be average defensively but I hope is able to play both for us.

I don't know how to judge the other trades for Escobar, Pressly and Duke because I haven't seen the prospects.

Austin I've seen... I'm encouraged by the acquisition... could pay off.

Well, now people can say they are punting this year.

OTOH, Mejia goes in for Lynn.....so about the same? Not sure.....

Yep. Lynn was redundant.
