Game Thread: Twins @ Yankees, 4/26/18 @ 12:05 PM CT

Welcome to my first dabble into game threads! I would have volunteered to write more game threads this year, but we’ve been busy growing our family. Baby # 3 was born on April 10th. My relatives say that we should have enough kids to field an entire baseball team. I think we should have named baby # 3 Shohei so that we only need to have 9 kids.

Series Recap:

31277483_10100441583655140_7773284134833

The Yankees (14-9, 2nd in AL East) are hosting the Twins (8-11, 3rd in AL Central) for game 4 of a 4-game series. The Yankees have taken the first three games of the series and outscored the Twins 29 to 8. The Yankees have won 5 straight, while the Twins have lost 6 straight. The Twins are playing like the ‘best’ team in the South Park Little League. That is, they seem to be finding every way to lose so they can be done with baseball and go play with their friends for the rest of the summer. Maybe we need a Bat Dad. Maybe we need a brawl to liven things up. Maybe the Twins need to sign or call up somebody like Kelly Leak (the motorcycle kid) in Bad News Bears.

Since I’m writing the game thread, you may be wondering what happened to our game thread expert and aficionado, Riverbrian. Well, I’m glad you asked…

1. Things Riverbrian can do today instead of writing a game thread

  • The Mn Twins. No, not the MN Twins. The Mn Twins. It’s an art exhibition at the The Star Tribune Foundation Atrium featuring works by twin brothers Bly and Rowan Pope.
  • ‘Dream Big: Engineering Our World’ at the Science Museum of Minnesota Omnitheater, featuring the greatest engineering marvels from around the world. I haven’t seen it, but odds are that the Metrodome is not featured in this film.
  • Skip seeing A Quiet Place at the theaters, and for a true thrill visit the World’s Quietest Room at Orfield Laboratories in Minneapolis. Considered the ‘quietest place on Earth,’ this anechoic chamber measures at negative 13 decibels. Never before have you so clearly heard your lunch traveling through your bowels. For a bonus thrill, try eating at Chipotle before visiting.

Disclaimer: The activities/events mentioned are in the Twins Cities and greater Minnesota, and do not necessarily reflect the current whereabouts or residence of Riverbrian.

2. Starting Pitchers and Key Matchups

Kyle Gibson (RHP, Minnesota): 1-1 in 4 starts, 4.29 ERA, 8.6 K/9, 4.7 BB/9

  • Brett Gardner vs. Gibson: 3 for 9, 1 double, 1 triple, 2 walks
  • Didi Gregorius vs. Gibson: 2 for 9 with 3 strikeouts
  • Didi Gregorius: Homeruns in 4 consecutive games
  • Aaron Judge career vs. Twins: 11 for 29 with 1.220 OPS

Jordan Montgomery (LHP, New York): 2-0 in 4 starts, 3.80 ERA, 7.2 K/9, 3.8 BB/9

  • Miguel Sano vs. Montgomery: 1 for 3 with 1 HR and 3 RBI
  • Brian Dozier career @ Yankee Stadium: 16 for 74 (.216 AVG, .640 OPS)
  • Eddie Rosario career @ Yankee Stadium: 4 for 34 (.118 AVG, .235 OPS)
  • Logan Morrison career @ Yankee Stadium: 11 for 58 (.190 AVG, .570 OPS)

Colder than Embarrass

  • Robbie Grossman: 4 for 37 (.108 AVG, .337 OPS) to start 2018 season

  • Taylor Rogers: 9.53 ERA last 6 appearances

4. OBP (One Bad Pun)

I prefer to write my most tearable puns down on paper.

5. Magic 8-Ball (2018 Prediction Rate: 0-0)

Shake 1: “Concentrate harder and try again” (how rude)
Shake 2: “As I see it, yes”
Shake 3: “Don’t count on it”
Shake 4: “My sources say no”

My Magic 8-ball says… Twins lose today. File all complaints with Mattel.

Careful. A few more intros like this and they'll want you to do it full time.

Best line: "For a bonus thrill..." (though calling up Kelly Leak sounds like a good idea too).

Nice first GDT intro!    If they win, you have to do all of them until they lose.    Which is hopefully never.

Nice game thread, Respy, I especially liked the formatting.

I can thank Riverbrian for any formatting inspiration. Trying to keep things familiar with a few personal touches.

Go Twins!

I'm hoping to have an interesting game, going into the 7th inning or more. But, past history with the Yankees may say otherwise.

Come on Twins, find your spunk and beat these guys!!!

My petition to MLB for next year:

Once the schedule comes out, determine how many times the Twins & Yankees are scheduled for Yankee Stadium and then delete them from the schedule and make the Twins 0-3 (or 4) and the Yankees 3-0 (or 4) and thus compress their schedules.  No sense in wasting time with possible injuries or weather delays when we know already what's going to happen.

What, a Twins pitcher can have a 123 inning against the Twins? Strike out a couple? And his name is Kyle Gibson?

Great intro!!

I can't believe I spent 10 minutes watching a video on a silence chamber.  I don't know if I'll ever get that time back...

Posted

A 1-2-3 inning with 2 strikeouts and no walks?

Can we stop time and just savor this moment?

And against the Yankees, savoring for sure.......................................

Go into the silence chamber and wait for the game to conclude.

I was hoping the guy, would come out screaming...just glad I wasn't alone, watching/wasting those 10 minutes   ;)

Just too many holes right now in the lineup for the twins to cover up, especially when the HR numbers are down. Can't expect to clump together 3 or 4 hits in a row, which is apparently the only way we're able to score. Very hard to do when 4+ guys have about a 10-20% of reaching base

We now have two innings to savor?

*TWO* 1-2-3 innings vs. the Yankees in Yankee Stadium????

I'm about to go buy a lottery ticket.

shhhhh........

Another roster move: WCCO radio said that the Twins claimed David Hale from the Yankees, to take Kinley's spot.

Note: I'm unsure what that means for Slegers at the moment.
