Fun With Numbers - Schedule Edition

The Twins do not have home games on....

Opening Day

Mothers Day

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day

Fathers Day

Independence Day

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day

Literally, that's every day that matters from a ticket sales perspective.

What did the Twins do to piss off the schedule makers?

Hopefully, they'll have a home game on Columbus Day...

In 1931 Earl Webb had 659 plate appearances and hit 67 doubles, which is still the major league record for doubles in a season. That's roughly one double every 9.8 PA's.

Eduardo Escobar currently has 26 doubles in 250 plate appearances, one every 9.6 trips to the plate.

Looks like two years later Webb was out of baseball. Seems risky to offer Escobar a long term deal, now that I know this.

The top 5 pitchers for the Twins this year in K/9 are:

Busunitz (15.75)

Curtiss (13.50)

Presly (12.69)

Kinley (10.80)

Moya (10,80)

Okay, in most cases, that's a small sample size, but ...  yikes!

Petit was DFAd with an average over .300. How often does that happen?

We outrighted Glenn Williams with a career average of .425. Of course, it was at the end of the season, and he had spent the last 3 months of the season on the DL...

A 3-double day puts his current rate at one per 9.2 plate appearances.

I am glad our front office realizes that batting average (short of huge samples) is not a relieable predictor of future batting average.

Ready for absurd Mike Trout stats? He's failed to reach base in 11 games so far. He has reached base at least 4 times in 12 games. His OBP is currently .469(!!)

In the last 30 days, Twins have 2 starting pitchers in the top 25 in baseball according to Fangraphs WAR: Berrios at 15th with 0.9 WAR and Lance Lynn at 18 with 0.8 WAR.

They also have 2 starting pitchers in the top 25 on the season as well. Berrios at 15th with 2.1 WAR and Kyle Gibson at 25 with 1.5 WAR

Per BRef, Matt Magill has the 8th most WAR on the 2008 MN Twins.

Tied with Joe Mauer.

Even more impressive that he did that when he was 18 and not even a Twin yet!

Proof that it takes very little to provide as much value as Mauer!!

In 11 games since June 28, Daniel Palka of the White Sox has continued his slump and is batting .118 on 4 hits in 34 AB.

He also had 4 walks, and those four hits all were home runs. So he has a tolerable OPS of .681 in that span, built on a BABIP of .0000! (I went an extra decimal just to show that it wasn't a matter of rounding.)

And yes, for fans of Three True Outcomes, he has 19 Ks in those 38 PA.

Except for the strikeouts, he is the Anti Ryan LaMarre. Now that they are on the same team, the baseball diamond may implode on itself.

Since TF opened, the Twins have the worst record in MLB.

I was promised FUN with numbers. Leaving, disappointed.

The "Get To Know Each Other" thread got me to thinking about Rik Aalbert Blyleven.

He came up in 1970 at age 19.

Starting in 1971, his age 20 season, over the next 6 seasons he put up the following numbers:

1745 Inning Pitched (an average of 290 per year).

ERAs that ranged between 2.52 and 3.00 (with FIPs that ranged from 2.32 to 2.99)

1411 Ks, in an era where Ks were nowhere near as common as today

98 Ws.

110 complete games. One. Hundred. And. Ten. Over six seasons. An average of 18 per year.

Times have changed, but talk about a horse.

All of that was good enough to get him traded to Texas in 1976, BTW.

Many consider Johan Santana the best ever Twins pitcher. I love me some Johan, but for my money, that title belongs to Bert.

Johan was the best the Twins had relative to the rest of the league. There’s a reason why Bert never got much Cy Young consideration (other than being on some low win total teams). Those reasons were mostly Seaver, Carlton, Ryan, Jenkins and others who’s names I’m blanking on. There were a lot of all time great pitchers in Bert’s era. That’s a big part of why it took so long to get him in. He was probably the least accomplished of his peer group. It was just an exceptional group. Kinda like comparing Vince Coleman and Tim Raines with Rickey Hendeseon. Just because Raines and Coleman weren’t as good as Rickey, doesn’t mean they weren’t great.

Posted

I don't know, 71-76 Fangraphs seems to think he was Ok:

Sure, year in and year out he was consistently great over that span. The problem was that other than arguably 1973 he was never THE best in one single year. And again, look at the other names in the top 10 on that list. Hall of Famers, multiple Cy Youngs. And largely guys that played on better teams. That mattered to the voters of the day. Things like ERA+, WAR, etc was beyond their understanding.
