Maybe our sports teams should be named for our state bird. So which team gets to be called the Loons?

Okay ... looking at the list of state birds, that might not work ... we'd have too many Cardinals followed by a number of Turkeys, Mockingbirds and Meadowlarks. Then we'd have to distinguish between eastern and mountain Bluebirds, and who would get Robins?

But truly, Minnesota is the only Loon among the bunch.

I'm a bit of a birder, living in a good place for it and such. Down here we have these awesome Streak-backed and Spot-breasted orioles.

Beautiful!

My parents were backyard birders ... always had feeders of different sorts up to attract different varieties. Orioles (of the Baltimore variety) were always so pretty.

I'm not sure if I'm doing this birdwatching thing correctly.... Just zooming in on my computer screen with binoculars.

Those of us who actually live in Minnesota know it's the nickname for Minnesota United FC. (I haven't watched one bit of any of their games, even highlights.)

Try zooming in on a bird book.  Much more professional like.

My Chief Procurement Officer and I (Titular Head of Household) start every day bird-watching over morning coffee and cookies (she makes these tremendous shortbreads) from either the sun room or the deck, weather depending. But our orioles are limited to the Baltimore and Orchard varieties. We'd kick the coffee table over with excitement if one of these babies ever landed at one of her feeders. But I'd make sure there was no damage to the shortbreads. A man's gotta keep his priorities straight...

I took this picture of a bird at the ruins of Teotihuacan in central Mexico. Anyone want to take a crack at what it is? I think it might be a flycatcher, actually.

I'm not real sure, but I think it may be a Vermilion Flycatcher.

Other birds that are unfortunately ignored when coming up with a team nickname:

- Pigeons

- Peacocks

- Storks

- Flufftails

My college is the Pomona Sagehens (Pomona-Pitzer for athletics) -- "a small flightless bird that plays dead when cornered."  The only teams we played (soccer) where I felt the mascot advantage were the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and Whittier Poets . . . not that a Poets wouldn't intimidate a Sagehen in real life, just that "Poets" is a dumb mascot.

The last Vermillion Flycatcher I saw was probably a 20 minute drive from Chief's house.

Not a bird you'd see up here this far north and in the city. I used to feed the birds on my balcony ... mostly for live cat TV ... mostly got house finches, a few cardinals, had a single rose-breasted grosbeak once, must've been lost, then the morning doves started showing up. I drew the line there and stopped. Besides being incredibly messy, the next step after morning dove was pigeon, if they made it up that high to the 11th floor. My parents always had a lot of birds in their backyard, from humming birds to wild turkeys, was always interesting to see what showed up to their various feeders.

There is a bird sanctuary not too far from me, but I've never been.

Is that why they call it a sanctuary?

Three or four lifetimes ago I coached a team against the Blossoms. Had a helluva time trying to fire up my guys to take on the Blossoms. Bunch of pansies.
