yeah, although not clear, that is what I meant. He let himself get to 286, only lost 15 pounds, and is now sitting at 271 as he tries to tackle the hot corner.

Only lost 15 pounds? C'mon Jimmer, try being a 23 year old professional athlete, still trying to build strength and lose more than 15 pounds. It's quite a feat.

So is getting to 286 but they are two separate things.

He lost the temporary weight he put on during the season, right?  That's not really established long term weight and should have been easy to lose.  Especially for a young professional athlete with everything available to him to help him do it.

So, yeah, ONLY 15 pounds in 4+ months.  He should have lost what he gained in the season last year, especially since he showed up overweight in ST last year. AND THEN he should have lost another 10-15.

Yeah, just that easy. The fascination and judgment of Sano's weight never ceases to amaze me.

Yeah, it's horrible that fans discuss conditioning of professional athletes.  What are they thinking?  Those discussions shouldn't be discussed on a sports board.

I said fascinating not horrible.

His 286 pounds last year didn't appear to be that much of a problem at 3B.

To me it seemed to be concentration related the majority of the time.

He made some real incredible plays and made some T-Ball Level type boots.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens in 2017.

Riverbrain nailed it. This is exactly his problem. He'll make incredible plays, firing rockets off to 1st, then turn around and boot an easy grounder. He needs to stay focused.

Right. When arbitration and free agency starts to roll around, things will start making sense to him. That's what we all hope, anyway.

That's why they call me River Brain!!!

I did mean Sano, yes.  And for a 3B, I didn't see him moving well last year at 3B (or the year before) with the exception of coming in well on slow rollers and just slowly hit balls in general.

That lateral movement can also be attributed to focus and not solely attributed to his size.

I watched Plouffe look like pylon for a couple of years before he started dialing in a little better.

I'm not saying I'm right... but I am saying that one size does not fit all.

So Sano was weighing around 286 pounds when he was playing RF last season?! That's like the Vikings playing a defensive tackle at safety.

I'd love to see that... Make the WR think twice about coming over the middle.

Here is Sano's math equation:  3B - LF= MVP2B

Please save the math for the game threads, where we know Chief is there to help us with those types of things.

(And if you have not been on a game thread, we will remind you about it :)

I echo many of the posters here who, even given Sano's need to maybe lose another 3rd grader or so, are welcoming the return to sanity.  So much better than the Twin-sanity they're shown over the past couple years with May in the BP and Sano in the OF.

I grew up watching Killebrew man the 3rd sack on regular shifts.  Yes, he didn't have the greatest range, but that bat had to be in the lineup, as does Sano's.  If you've got to make some defensive sacrifice, that's what corner positions are for.

I leave you with this, from the great Frankie Frisch:  "All you need to play 3rd base is a strong arm and a strong chest."  Miggy Jr. has got that in spades.

Do you mean the Hot Pocket?

Sorry, couldn't resist, even though I think Sano will be decent or at least unembarrassing at third.

Um,yeah. Good luck with that.

Anthony Barr is 6'4 250

Everson Griffin is 6'3 270

Kyle Rudolph is 6'6 260

All of them are plenty athletic at that size.  His defensive struggles at 3rd haven't been from his weight, unfortunately also haven't been helped by the Twins not getting him reps for a year+.

There will be some lumps, c'mon we sat through Plouffe, but Sano has all the tools to stick at 3rd for awhile.  His value as a 3rd baseman is light years ahead of his value at 1st/dh, he needs every opportunity to play there.

That being said defense isn't going to be his strength and pairing him with a rangey defensive shortstop would be very wise.  Its unfortunate due to the Polanco situation that appears unlikely to happen in the short term.

You need to let the number go.  Not everyone has the same body type.  Some can carry 270 a whole lot better than the rest of us.  From the looks of it, Sano is one of those guys.

Shouldn't be at 23. Peak metabolism. Plus he's a pro athlete. Has trainers dieticians and games in sleeves and 100 degree heat. He should shed excess weight during the season. The fact that he gained weight during the season may be as troubling as anything. That said, he's a kid. He quit drinking. This all speaks to rededication. Hopefully there will be more concentration in the field, in the batters box, and of the field. In other words, more maturity.

Glynn also noted how well Sano lays out for a ball. There is value in that. Due to all his core injuries Plouffe has been unable to dive for a ball in years.

Its value until he gets hurt diving for a ball...

This reminds me of one particular game back in my career playing 3B.

The field was orientated so the Sun set right in my line of sight toward the batter's box. Of course, when it was in the perfect position a guy smoked a liner right at me. Had no chance to catch it because I couldn't see it, and just stuck my chest out. Hit me just left of the sternum and luckily knocked it down in front of me so I was able to pick it up and get a force out at 2B.

Don't recall it really hurting when it happened (adrenaline) or after, but I did have stitch marks in my chest for a few days.

Lost 15 pounds and is still 271 LBs.

LOL....this is HILARIOUS.  I remember last off season some of us taking all kinds of flak and bs from other posters here because we DARED to say that there's no way sano is 260 pounds.

WELL WELL WELL.

Yep.  He's overweight.  No excuses....SORRY!  I don't want to hear it.  The kid is WAY to heavy right now, DH or not.

Do we need to start the Sano athleticism drinking game already?

He may have strength, agility and quickness but he's out of shape at that weight.

Discussion is fine, it's when they turn their assumptions and into fact.

That's a quite the medical diagnosis done from the computer.

Come on nick.  The guy is 6'-4" and weighed 280+ pounds.  That's too much.
