Twins to Release Park?

Buried in Ken Rosenthal's latest article was this tidbit on Byungho Park ...

"The Twins will release Park, to whom they owe $9.75 million over the next three seasons, if they cannot trade him. The Rays then could sign Park as a free agent for the minimum, with the Twins paying the rest."

Pretty shocking if this is true. Why wouldn't they keep him around in Rochester?

Wow. Prior to last season there were some pretty positive projections for him. Top KBO players have mostly acquitted themselves well in MLB.

This really has me puzzled. Not even interested in how he responds with a healthy wrist?

If true I suspect he'll just go back to Korea and cash the checks.

That makes absolutely no sense to just release him if he clears waivers. I would at least give him until mid May to early June to see if he can turn it around. You have to give him a chance since the money is guaranteed.  Unless the new FO thinks they are trying to trick teams into not claiming him by saying that they will release him.

Pay $9.75M for 3 years or $1.5M for 3 years. It would make a team like Tampa maybe pass and save the money and gamble he can produce.

Last note on this, if the FO is trying to bluff teams like this we are gonna be in a world of hurt if this is their plan. I don't want to guess what the next thing would be. Maybe a 4 year extension for Danny Santana is next...

I saw this too, but I think the Twins want to keep him. You can't just eat $9.75M when you can stash him in AAA and give him a second chance.

It would seem weird that the Twins would release Park. It is not like they have another prospect at a high level other than Vargas. Why would you eat the money and have no players. Clearly if someone thinks that Park has MLB potential, Park would have some trade value when or if he performs.

Only thing I can think of is that they're evaluations of Park are just really bad. I mean, they have Ben Paulsen and Reynaldo Rodriguez and Matt Hague all on minor league deals in Rochester. Not that they're great options, but if they think they're better options than Park, then that speaks volumes and they might as well just cut the losses.

But yeah, no reason to not send him to Rochester and just see what he can do with a healthy wrist... or maybe those evaluations are that the wrist won't get better. Seems like there must be something more to this.

UPDATE It appears this was an error on Rosenthal' part, this article has since bee updated.

"Park, recently designated for assignment, would need to be a trade. The Twins do not plan to release Park, to whom they owe $9.25 million over the next three seasons. The expectation is that they simply would remove him from their 40-man roster, and keep him in their organization."

Correction makes more sense,  but makes you wonder somethings were some people get stuff.  Also would wonder if a post like that would affect a writers contact with the team officals.

In any event, the Twins have designated Park for assignment and any team can claim him if they agree to pay his salary.

No, releasing him wouldn't make any sense. But it's not like they've committed to him, either. He could go at any time if some team is simply willing to cough up a few million a year.

Hypothetically, if a team DFA'd a player whom they wanted to sneak through to their 40-man, it sure seems like it would be helpful having a national reporter claim that the player will get released if the team can't trade him. It would be a good way to make other teams think they can get the player for a prorated portion of the remainder of the contract instead of full price if they simply wait out the waiver process and do not submit a claim.

Hypothetically.

Very confusing.  I guess I will continue to avoid tweeting, with the white house going crazy and the rest of the world rushing to tweet I think I will wait a day and see what is true after the dust settles.

What is this "tweeting" you speak of?

Wait, is there a new president?

Technically, "designated for assignment" does not mean Park is on waivers yet, although that is likely where he is headed.

have there been any rumors of Park or Parks agent asking for trade/release in the wake of being DFA'd?

Edit, after screen refresh from this morning, I see the note from Tom... so prolly not

How long does Park stay on waivers?

Once he is placed on waivers (which I don't think he has been officially, don't know), other teams have 3 days. If no one claims him in that 3-day period, he's cleared and the Twins can assign him to AAA.

Geeeeeeeeeez ... that put me in a serious state of WTF. Glad it was an error.

Makes you wonder about how the Dozier to LA talks went down.

I seriously hope the FO was not the source and asked not to be named as the source of the earlier report and then they back peddled when they looked like complete noobs. I will say this much, the new FO made 1 possibly good move in signing Castro. It might just be me, but if I am taking over a new organization I would want to make a bunch of minor deals and hope to catch lightning in a bottle and be able to flip a couple of those players to help a rebuild.

Thanks.

Then ... I looked up it. It appears to be 10 days.

"A player designated for assignment goes through a 10-day period on waivers."  That is, according to the 2/4/17 StarTrib article written by La Velle Neal III.

Park was designated on 2/3 or 2/4, I believe.

No, actually, it doesn't. Haven't heard of any retractions in any of the 'reports' made in those regards, where in this case, there was an actual retraction/correction, an 'ooops, my bad' tweet.

Actually ... according to a link pasted here earlier ... once DFA'd, the team has 10 days to waive/trade, release or reassign. When placed on waivers, claiming teams have 3 days to make a claim. Those 3 days are part of the 10, so the team DFAing said player has up to 7 days to actually put the player on waivers to accommodate the 3 days a claim can be made. When a player is DFA'd, he isn't automatically on waivers. I'm doing a terrible job at explaining something that confuses me and am not sure I have it right, so someone else who is clear-headed on this, please jump in.

I wonder if Park has requested his release if he doesn't get picked up. If I were him, I'd rather be a Superstar in Korea than a AAA player in the US.

Ive seen several tweets since the DFA that said he wants to stay here. There was one posted last night or this morning repeating it.

Can't seem to find it right now.
