"A straw man is a common form of argument and is an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not advanced by that opponent."

Yeah, let's not do that.

I don't believe for a second that the Twins would just release or trade Plouffe without a solid replacement at 3rd in place.

Polanco:  Stop thinking about "traditional" third-baseman.  Think:  Solid D, good/very good BA, OPS and ISO.  Those are the makings of a good/great third baseman.

In time, I think Polanco can be that person.

Sano is a DH that can fill-in, on a limited basis, at 1st, 3rd and RF.

I honestly don't understand what Straw Man Arguments mean anymore.

And no one is claiming that you do. :)

This should be an audition time for a waiver trade for Plouffe.  His last game could be a good sign for a possible trade.  Maybe its time for one of those mysterious injuries to pop up on a player who will go on the DL until the trade is made.  I hate to see them mess with Vargas - he has done well this round and deserves more time.  Buxton is logical, but really isn't going to gain from AAA again.  Sano is a mystery, but one we have to ride out.  Messing with his confidence is bad, but so is 36% strikeouts.  Grossman is not our future so he would lose out for me.

Grossman is not our future so he would lose out for me.

He is out of minor league options so if you DFA him you probably lose him. You are saying you're OK with that?

At this point I am.  He had a good ride and did everything we could ask of him, but if people are ready to DFA Plouffe then I think Grossman is a better sacrifice.  Santana is everyone's favorite, but he has done exactly what we want from him and his speed and batting stats are fine for a utility guy.  Beyond that Buxton, Rosario, Kepler are untouchable.

Plouffe could have more value now than in the offseason. The Indians need some additional power and the Tigers need a full-time 3B. He should clear the other teams in the waiver process. There's no reason for a developing team to take him and the other contenders have 3B covered. (He could get "blocked", I guess)

It's not likely this will all fit together but there is a chance. Hopefully, it works out for everyone - Plouffe moves to a contender. The Twins get both a low-level prospect and an open roster spot. I'd be willing to put Plouffe on the roster for a week to see if anyone bites. Send Vargas to AAA until something happens or September 1.

Listened to Twins coverage all morning and all signs point to Sano being demoted. So all the Sano haters out there can start covering your man caves with plastic sheeting for the champagne celebration when it's officially announced. :)

SS-Polanco

3B-Plouffe

I would send Buxton down and expect it might be for a year, he his still young.  Sano can make the adjustments and work things out up here.  Plouffe might draw interest due to injuries on contending teams. When Plouffe goes you can work things out then.  If Plouffe is still on the Twins and tendered this offseason, then the front office needs a complete overhall.

I honestly don't understand what Straw Man Arguments mean anymore.

It's my opinion and I'm not really arguing.

Anyway... I'm trying to remember the games that he played in the OF.

If Memory serves... He was horrible at SS and therefore moved to the OF because he couldn't play SS. He played about 20 or 30 games and then Valencia was horrible at 3B and Plouffe was moved to 3B and then I remember Plouffe being horrible at 3B until he got... OK at it.

You did not make a straw man argument, as you were stating an opinion of your own and not rebutting another poster.

I keep reading people talking about Sano haters.  Who are these posters who hate Sano?  Are these the people who don't like his fielding?  Is that what it takes to be called a hater?

You're seldom going to take heat for demoting a 22 year old who's below the Mendoza line, and maybe this will turn out for the best.

That being said, it's frustrating to think that there may have been ANY role played in this decision by what should be the wholly unrelated fact that 'Trevor Plouffe is healthy'.

Well, if you want one of your team's best players in AAA, then yes it does raise some doubt regarding your opinion of said player.

Honestly, this was the right decision.  Rosario is still on the bit lucky side, but at least he's producing.  Buxton isn't and he isn't getting better. Letting him spend the rest of the season working in AAA isn't a bad thing.

Posted

Pretty clear this was the best choice if a player had to be moved for Plouffe.  He's over-matched here, and not sure why. He'll likely be back in less than a month.

Pretty easy - and I'd say necessary - choice.

Seth, this is an honest question, not an accusation:

What is the expected outcome of this decision? Is Buxton really going to learn anything by teeing off on AAA pitching again?

The guy dominates anything that isn't MLB pitching. We all know in our "common" lives that one doesn't learn when one is (not just a little but massively) superior to everyone around him.
