So what exactly do we do about the catcher spot?

Gibson's ERA 2015-now is 4.16.  You are suggesting "most" games he is pitching to roughly a 6.5 ERA.  I am not sure by what you mean by "most games" in terms of percentage of games but he would have to pitch a shutout in every other game that make up the rest of his games and even then you would have to use a very liberal definition of most.

I was clearly referring to this season. 2015 was a good year for him, no doubt, but I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish by arbitrarily averaging last year (coincidentally his best year) and this year together.

This year, in 7 out of 14 games he's given up 4+ runs in 6.1 or fewer innings. In another 3 he was saved by the bullpen in the 6th or 7th to keep him just out of that range. Sure, if we're being pedantic that isn't "most" but it's close enough that I don't otherwise see what the point is you're trying to make.

I'm not saying Gibson is terrible or should be outright dumped. I'm just saying that it's fair to put him on the hot seat because there is significant room for improvement if they can find a replacement.

Perfectly fine with going into next year with Centeno/Murph.  But would need to sign at least one guy in the Hicks / Centeno mode like this year for AAA depth.  Murph should be up and playing extensively the last 7-8 weeks so we have a better sense what he might become too.

Fair enough.  I just don't like to use a half-season to assess a player.  BTW ... I agree, He's nothing special but he is in his prime and it would not be surprising if the next couple years were his best.  Plus, it's not like we have several better options right now.

Let's see how he does the rest of the year.  I would be OK with me if he came out next year pitching his very best and we got a haul for him at the deadline.  I am just not so sure Gonsalves and/or Stewart will be ready by then.

There's no team option. Mike Berardino confirmed it's ONLY a vesting option

Edited to Add: I suppose we could DH him on his off days to try to get it to vest :)

Well, that's that, isn't it?

Unfortunately no. With this type of option, since he did not hit the number of plate appearances needed this season, the 1 year $6 million option for 2017 disappeared.

I actually understood that and was agreeing with amjgt. I want to have Garver up anyways.

On a good team even a number 5 should give you a chance to win most nights. Gibson does that every 3rd or 4th start, maybe, but most nights is giving up 4 runs over 5-6 innings and leaving with runners on base. Hard to win those games (unless you're playing the Indians and have a Max Kepler).

That is a  fantasy land statement. Yes it is the ideal your 5th starter gives you a chance to win. Quality starts most nights just do not happen from the 5th starter, even the 4th. With only 3 starers per team so far this year making it as qualified it shows how thin the pitching is Last year only 77 pitchers pitched enough to be qualified.  A 5th starter with an ERA under 4.5  Only 104 pitchers last year pitched 90 innings or more with an under 4.5 ERA. Your definition more fits a 4th starter.

Chatannoga played 7 games this week. Garver caught just two of them. As much as we like the slash stats and .761 OPS, we have to know that he isn't ready or prepared to be a starting major league catcher next year.

The Twins have to look elsewhere. They also need to give him regular time at catcher in AAA next year.

We shouldn't ignore 2013 where he had 10 starts, with mostly rough results.

Yes, we should. I'm not defending Gibson here, I'm only pointing out that if you have to include a partial rookie season of a guy coming back from TJ surgery to illustrate a point, maybe your point kinda sucks.

Given how Gibson has pitched lately, he looks a lot like a #4. I was hoping for better.

But let's not discount the value of a guy who throws innings that keeps the team in the game. There is a reason why many "contender" teams go with a three man rotation in the postseason. Their #4/5 guys simply aren't good enough for a postseason game. That doesn't mean those players were worthless during the regular season.

I haven't had time to read the entire thread, but if the supposed answer is Ramos, let's be sure to know how big an outlier this is for the Nats catcher. He's never had an OPS of .800 and his currently sits at .932. His OPS+ was below 100 until this year. He's a good defensive catcher and he turns 29 this year, but as recently as last year he hit only .229 with a .616 OPS. He's been great this year, but the Twins once signed a catcher to an extension after his best season.

We could go after Hicks or Pinto or maybe even bring back Drew Butera. All may be looking for jobs next year! Hey, Rene Rivera is out there, too! And...of course...The Return of A.J.!
