Pirates Trade Ideas

According to my 45 second research project, the pirates have two nice looking young catchers (Maguire, and Diaz) in the pipeline, and seem to be seeking bullpen help. What do you think it would take to pry away some of their existing surplus?

According to another quick look, they may also need starters. Maybe a Santana+Abad for one of the young catchers and a young flamethrower?

Well it would first take actually having somoene in our bullpen that would be valuable for another team. I'm not sure we have any?

The Twins would have to eat Santana's salary this year to get surplus value.

I would.  Will Pohlad?

The Pirates could like dump Santana on a team like the Rockies in the off-season.

They just called up Glasnow, who is a pretty good pitching prospect.  Not sure they will send him back down.

According to a more in depth view, the Pirates top 2 catchers are on the DL and their current starter in the position is Erik Fryer...  Cervelli had hand surgery and for a catcher that is not quite good.

They might need Suzuki ;)

Their pen is fine, but they do need starters.  Both Niese and Locke are about to get the boot (and, no, the Twins should not go after any of them)

They have already shuffled a good dozen pitchers (both starters and relievers) between AAA and the majors this year

BTW, count me as a no against a all glove no bat catcher in Maguire.  We have one of those in Stuart Turner.

I think the Pirates will opt for defense over offense at catcher. They were among the first to reference pitch framing. Cervelli has been among the best. I wouldn't imagine that Suzuki would be one of their targets.

Wait a minute.  A team values defense?  Is that allowed? :-)

Don't know if they'd do it, but how about Dozier for Glasnow or Taillion? The poster above who talked about the Pirates frugalness was dead on. I doubt they trade a young (cheap) prospect. But Dozier's contract is not bad.

Staying in the division, the Cardinals desperately need a 2B to replace Wong, who's having a terrible year. Reyes is obviously off the table, but at least the Cardinals are always willing to deal.

I'll help out.  They wouldn't do it.

I doubt that the guys we have to trade are worth much. Either not very good or bad contracts limit what will come back.

I beg to differ. We have the most valuable commodity in all of baseball, which is young starting pitching. BA had 6 starting pitchers in our top 10.

In the context of acquiring prospects, prospect commodities are not worth that much.
