I'm getting pretty sick of the "classic moments from the MLB vault", especially because I've had to listen to Dick call Frank Thomas' 500th homer 3 times already.

This is one of my two favorite times of the year. I love the final week of the baseball season to watch those 4-6 teams that are fighting for their postseason lives. I'm just glad this year the Twins are one of those teams.

And when the pitchers were el stinko, I added 4 inches on both sides of the plate and told the batters to come up swinging. Coaches liked that.

We had a guy umping once in Little League in my little home town named Smitty. He ran the local tavern. A cantankerous man. They asked to ump once and he called strikes three feet inside, outside, upside, and downside. Just a crazy bastard.

Reminds me of a chat I had yesterday with my physical therapist. She was wondering if NASA's announcement meant there was life on Mars, and all I could say is at least they have a little better idea of where to look. Why spend all that money, she wondered, which got the conversation into an existential direction about the significance of searching for life on other planets and stuff. We started getting into stellar evolution and shifting Goldilocks zones, but ran out of time.

 

I do wonder tho, if Mars were the same size as Earth, would it still have an atmosphere and life? A molten core would really come in handy out there on the edge of the habitable zone, for heat as well as for that magnetosphere.

 

Speaking of survivability, the Twins need a rock-solid performance from the core of their starting rotation, Kyle Gibson, who must hurl up to a hundred small satellites into very brief, low-Earth orbits with sufficient directional and rotational velocities to fool a good number of Indians. Let us hope that Gibson's satellites do not collide too hard with wooden sticks traveling in the opposite direction.

 

To this day... I still remember a day in 4th grade. A Classmate asked if Martians were real and the teacher said no they are not because only earth has what is needed to sustain life Oxygen... Blah Blah Blah and It's too Cold on Mars. Life simply can't survive on other planets for that reason. 

 

As a 4th grader I stood tall and replied. "But what if Martians don't need oxygen and they like it really really cold".

 

The teacher had no response.

 

For some reason... I still remember this 40 some years later.

Speaking of Lindor, my buddy and I were having a debate on which rookie in the MLB you would want the most on your team. My buddy went with Lindor because he looks like someone who will stick at SS the majority of his career. It's tough to pass up 40+ HR potential that Sano, Bryant, Schwarber, and Gallo have. I went with Swihart on account of the C position being desolate of young studs, with Sano as a close 2nd.

No Lindor?  If I could do Sano for Lindor straight up, I probably say no, but I think about it a lot longer than the Indians do I'd wager.

If we had a Lindor at SS, along with our other youngsters, we would be SET.

Correa was in the mix too, but our concern was he may be switched over to 3rd or 1st before Lindor changes positions. 

 

I can't imagine ever switching Correa to a different position... He's one of the top Defensive Shortstops in the game right now. Range... Arm... Glove and a few tricks up his sleeve.

Just a thought, but the dozens of people that cared enough to come out to cheer the Tribe seem to know that it's a team that's packed it in, and by contrast the Twins are amazingly a bunch of focused dudes. We may be seeing something special in the making.
