Stauffer to the DL, Pressly Recalled

Recommended Posts

Rhett Bollinger was first to tweet that the Twins are going to recall Ryan Pressly from Rochester. To make room, Tim Stauffer is being put on the Disabled List.

LaVelle Neal is tweeting that it is an intercostal injury for Stauffer...

Ouch! My intercostal!!

Hmmmmm.......another ineffective pitcher ends up on the DL.

I am not usually snarky but I will beat everyone to punch on this one......I'm sure the injury was the result of the torque from his head snapping around watching balls leave the yard.

And still no Oliveros. If you are not on the 40 man, you might be better and not get the call.

So... I am a little behind on all the moves lately -

Stauffer to the DL, replaced by Pressly. Easy enough.

Nolasco is being activated from the DL, so there's a second move pending?

Milone will be moved to the bullpen to make room for Nolasco in the rotation, so does that signal the move will be a lefty reliever? Thielbar? Thompson?

Duensing is expected to be activated as well... so... who else is getting demoted / DFA'd?

Well, good for Pressley, I guess.

Neither Alex nor Ryan was/is Pressley. Alex is Presley, and Ryan is Pressly. Having him back.... it will rekindle the various wrong spellings of his name. But then, losing Stauffer will save his name from being misspelled, so that is a wash. ;) At least with Santana we just need to know the first name.

That makes sense.  it would explain Duensing's injury, too.

I have these same questions. When Nolasco and Duensing come back, roster moves have to be made. With more bullpen arms getting called up for Fien and Stauffer, I'm curious what the Twins plans are when the two veterans return.

Maybe Blaine Boyer goes away! That would make my weekend.

Mike Berardino (if that's how you spell it) reported yesterday that Duensing was going to be activated, which means another player would need to go. Not sure who after Thielbar goes for Nolasco.

I suppose they could send back Tonkin (who was recalled when Fien went on the DL)... but they just added him... Or they could send Pressly back down. Boyer is probably getting another 4 or 5 appearances before the Twins decide to cut him... That's a complete guess on my part, just my gut feeling...

Boyer has pitched pretty well this season.  He has only had 1 bad outing where he gave up 3 Runs.

Regarding Stauffer, I don't understand why they didn't wait 1 day and play short tonight and DL Stauffer tomorrow when the activate Duensing.  I am sure that Pressly will be sent back down tomorrow when Duensing gets activated.

Boyer has pitched pretty well this season.  He has only had 1 bad outing where he gave up 3 Runs.

Boyer has also allowed 50% of inherited runners to score and everyone who was on third with him on the mound has scored. That's not a relief pitcher, that's a BP guy. He's pitched well of late, yes, but you can't ignore the other outings. Like Jarod Burton last season, you can't keep saying "he hasn't been terrible lately..." and ten keep him on the roster when you have arms in AAA who are on the 40-man roster and ready to contend. No one in the pen is making enough money that their job is safe, especially not borderline Boyer.

I guess it is okay to have another arm available for tonight, but there will have to be players sent down or released.  With Stauffer on the DL, that rules out one possible DFA.  Boyer would be DFAed if the Twins don't want him on the active roster.  Thielbar is the obvious candidate, since he hasn't been that effective (until last night) and his option for this year was already used.  Could the club (kind of) reverse course and option Milone?  I don't like the idea of having a 28-year old soft tosser in the 'pen in long relief.

I wonder if a player like Stauffer goes on the DL it saves the Twins money?  Does insurance than pay their salary?  However, if they released him they would still have to pay him...Maybe that is why they put unproductive players on the DL.  Didn't they do that with Bartlett last year?

He has pitched in 11 games.  He's come in with runners on 4 times and let at least 1 runner score twice.

Perkins has also let 50% of inherited runners (1 of 2) score, should we drop him too?  Thompson has let 3 of 7 in.

It's kind of sad, imo, that they can't just admit they were wrong and move on......

To be somewhat fair, he was throwing 91 last year and now he's throwing 88... it's possible that something's wrong. He was pretty good in the Padres bullpen the last two years, including good strikeout numbers, so I don't have any problem with them saying, let's check and see what's going on. Maybe they will find something. If not, they paid him like a 6th/7th inning guy and they can let him go. Doesn't hurt them any to put him on the DL.

Typically insurance can only be claimed for an extended DL stint, something like half of a year or more. I know the Twins had to work to get Puckett's insurance claim.

Either way, the player gets the money guaranteed to him by the contract.

I guess that "tumor" removed from Milhone wasn't the cure-all?

Prediction:  There will be many Twins' pitchers spending time on the IR List--until September.
