Fun With Numbers: 2015 Edition

Correction--I think that was the last time the Twins won 20 games in May. They were 22-6 in June, 1991. There may have been others (2006, maybe?) but that one I know for sure.

I was going to say, they won 20 in a row in 1991 and after losing a game turned around and won 5 more.

Mike Pelfrey leads the league in HBP with seven hit batters.

He's really gettin' after it out there.

@MikeBerardino: Pelfrey: 7 hit batters, 2.59 ERA

Gibson: 4 HBP, 2.61 ERA

Hughes: 1 HBP, 4.96 ERA

May: 1 HBP, 5.07 ERA

Nolasco: 1 HBP, 5.51 ERA

So odd that those ERA and FIP numbers are running in opposite directions like that...

Division records relative to .500:

AL Central: +19

NL West: +9

AL West: -1

NL Central: -3

AL East: -11

NL East: -13

Today:

NL Central: +15

AL Central: +7

AL East: +7

AL West: +1

NL West: -3

NL East: -27

Things can shift quite quickly if just a few teams go on a roll or into a dive, especially when there aren't many intradivision games.

Only 11 qualified pitchers have a K/9 of less than 5.5.  Only two of those have an ERA less than 4.00.  Both are Twins.

And neither throw with their left hand.

Postgame Twinsights: Just how solid has this #MNTwins rotation become? ERA now 9th-best in #MLB.

Too often, this thread isn't fun at all so here are some really fun stats we can all enjoy.

The White Sox are a miserable 33-42.

Their Pythag record is even worse at 29-46.

Their BaseRuns record is even worse than that at 27-48.

The White Sox are a really bad baseball team.

I said all along I thought they'd battle for the cellar in our division.  To me, this is fantastic but not unexpected.  For me, the surprise teams so far in our division have been our team and the Indians.  A lot of season left.

I was also wary of the White Sox's chances of success. I never fully bought into the Indians either but thought they'd be slightly better than they are right now.

Like most people, I didn't see the Twins coming at all.

I, too, claim credit for calling this. Those splashy offseason moves weren't very good, and I think most of the people here who were duped by them were just spouting the same old crap about how the Twins "aren't doing enough." According to their expert opinions.
